VERY RARE WINCHESTER MODEL 1873 SADDLE RING CARBINE WITH SOCKET BAYONET.

SN 78419. Cal. 44 WCF (44-40). Standard grade carbine with 20″ rnd bbl, half-magazine, square-base front sight/bayonet lug & 2 position, flip rear sight graduated to 500 yards. Receiver is 2nd Type with attached dust cover rail and 3rd type dust cover, with staple & ring in the left side. Bbl band is Model 1866 style. Mounted with uncheckered, straight grain American walnut, with straight stock & carbine buttplate that has trap containing an orig 3-pc brass & steel wiping rod. Accompanied by an orig Winchester socket bayonet that has 18-1/2″ tapered triangle blade and is finished bright. This bayonet will fit this carbine but will not fit a standard carbine. Little is known of these apparent military carbines. Information conveyed to this cataloger several years ago indicated that these carbines were mostly sold into South America with others possibly into the Belgian Congo. This cataloger has previously examined other ’73 carbines with socket bayonets that have had Belgium proofs. This carbine is without proofs which likely indicates it was one of the group sold into South America. PROVENANCE: The Estate of G. W. “Bill” Stewart of Sonora, Texas. CONDITION: Very good to fine. Overall, traces of finish remain in the most sheltered areas being a smooth medium plummy/brown patina, possibly a very old artificially aged finish. Stock has a couple of gouges around the wrist with light nicks & scratches and retains an old refinish. Mechanics are fine. Strong bright bore. Bayonet retains most of its orig bright finish. 49973-498, 49973-247, JR92 (3,000-5,000) – Lot 1030
