VERY RARE 1ST MODEL 1866 WINCHESTER FLAT SIDE SADDLE RING CARBINE WITH R.J. ANDREW SAN ANGELO, TEX. SADDLE SCABBARD.

SN 14390. Cal. 44 RF. 20″ bbl. Blue finish with gun metal receiver. Straight grained American walnut stocks with crescent butt. Saddle ring. Bbl has standard carbine sights with traces of Henry’s patent bbl address in front of sight. Gun metal receiver is of flat side style with not swell at forward end. Loading gate is of flat style SN is marked on left tang under buttstock, in upper tang mortise of stock and on inside toe of buttplate. Assembly no. 1044 is stamped on left side of lower tang in front of SN and on inside of each side plate. Saddle scabbard has a russet brown finish with a clear maker’s mark on right side. PROVENANCE: The Estate of G. W. “Bill” Stewart of Sonora, Texas. CONDITION: Good to very good for this model. Bbl and magazine tube are gray-brown patina overall with heavy erosion overall especially toward muzzle. Sights are good. Bbl address is readable. Bore is very dark with visible rifling. Gun metal receiver is a pleasing mustard patina overall with numerous dents and scratches around side plate especially on right side. Screws are somewhat marred. Elevator has a pleasing mustard patina with numerous dents. Hammer, lever and trigger are a dark brown patina with considerable erosion. Stocks are very good, full-sized with numerous scratches and dents overall commensurate with age and use of carbine. Buttplate is a mustard brown patina with some high point wear. Bbl band screw is missing. Saddle ring is orig. Scabbard is good with a sharp maker’s mark and black staining and crazing toward muzzle end. A very colorful and rare 1st model 1866 Winchester carbine that definitely saw service on the Texas frontier. 49973-18 TEP (5,000-7,000) – Lot 1008
