OUTSTANDING FOLK ART PICTORIAL HOOKED RUG. Found in Maine, this rectangular rug has a central pot of red flowers and olive and brown colored leaves. Central flower being a closed tulip form flanked by two large red open tulip forms. Two multicolored diamonds in the top corners. Below which is a red and olive green house with front path. The houses are configured in color reverse of each other. Two more squareish diamonds are seen beside the central pot. Multicolored border in blue, gray and green. DELBERT DANA COOMBS (American, 1850-1938) PORTRAIT OF MAINE GOVERNOR DINGLEY. Large oil on canvas portrait shows Governor Dingley seated in a Victorian wood and upholstered open armchair. He wears a black suit and bow tie and has graying beard and looks toward viewer. In his lap, being held by his hand, is the Tariff Act that he was instrumental in enacting. He sits at a large roll top desk. Signed lower right “D. D. Coombs 1899”. Housed in a signed Newman Macklin Co. frame No. 9142. Governor Nelson Dingley, Jr. (1832-1899) served as Governor of Maine in 1874. He was a member of the State House of Representatives, elected to the 47th Congress and re-elected to the 48th and to the seven succeeding Congresses serving until his death in Washington, D.C. January 13th, 1899. PROVENANCE: Descended directly through the Dingley family to present owner. A very desirable historical painting by one of Maine’s fine artists. SIZE: 50” x 40”. Boat travels right to left flying American flag off stern, red and white pennant “R” off central mast and blue with red cross and white star flag at bow (New York Yacht Club). Two men at wheel, white hulled boat with three lifeboats and open deck with long white awning. Two stacks at midship. Seagulls are seen off stern. Signed bottom right “Antontio Jacobsen 1910”. There were four yachts named “Winchester” made between 1907 and 1915. Named after Peter Winchester Rouss and the name of the Virginia city from which he came. Housed in an oak molded wood frame with gold liner. Accompanying the painting is a blue rimmed soup bowl with “Winchester” emblazoned on the ivory edge. PETRUS CORNELIUS WEYTS (Belgian, 1799-1855) SHIP PORTRAIT OF THE “ONTARIO”. Outstanding reverse oil on glass portrait of the three-mast clipper ship “Ontario”. The ship sails from right to left in full sail. A small sailboat “Antwerpe No. 2” is off the bow. Antwerpe Harbor with many buildings is seen off stern. The ship hull is black and white with gold “Ontario” lettering. Nine people aboard with one having spy glass, the other at wheel. Large American flag with star is off stern and back mast. Middle mast has large red ship pennant and front mast has star on blue field. Black reverse painted border with gold trim with legend “Ontario of Newcastle, Maine. John Holmes. Comd. Leaving Antwerpe 1846”. “P. Weyts”. Housed in a beaded edge flat mahogany veneer frame. OUTSTANDING IVORY, SILVER AND WOOD BUGGY WHIP BY SWAINE & ADENEY, LTD. Two part branded “Swaine & Adeney, Ltd. Makers to the King and Queen 185 Piccadilly London”. The top 38-3/4” section has silver knob and ferrule flanking a carved knob shaped 9” shaft of ivory. Ferrule is hallmarked London but worn. Tip has ivory coupling end. End section is 45-1/2” with wrapped end and long whip. Shaft of both sections is a tapering, knob decorated wood piece. CONDITION: Generally very good. JAMES AMOS PORTER (American, 1905-1970) “HAITIAN DANCERS”. Unframed important mixed media/oil on canvas abstract modern scene shows three colorful dancers against a textured sand finish covered canvas. Signed lower right “Porter”. Label affixed to center stretcher “Societe D’Exploitation Des Ets Pottier, Paris” with pencil inscription “De La Raucheraye? Galerie House-New York”. Titled on top back stretcher. Also round canvas stamp and stamp to stretcher which appear to be import stamps. Large string tag affixed to top right of back stretcher from Portovault Day & Meyer, New York Wharehouses with WP Chrysler labels affixed. Item No. 2316. Printed No. 10624. Label indicates that this was in Chrysler’s storage unit and whether it was part of his displayed collection, we are not sure. James Porter was one of America’s important African-American artists and authored Modern Negro Art (1943 the first history of African-American art). His next exhibition will be “The Art of James A. Each serpentine cresting rail flanked by foliate tip ears above an open work carved splat carved with ribbon C-scrolls and tassel. Straight front seat raised on straight carved trapezoid shaped legs joined by plain stretchers. Wonderful out curving carved arms with scroll ends and curving arm supports. Legs have flower carved returns and carving to front and side including vine foliate carving and carved area to bottom of legs. Upholstered in cream leather seats. FINE SHERATON MAHOGANY SEWING STAND. Square central stand with two semicircular sides having lift top half storage area. One side has two dovetailed drawers. Other side a faux drawers. The young girl holds red umbrella under arm, the boy a large pair of boots and the father has a porcelain pipe. All are finely and colorfully dressed. Signed on side of cobblestone “L. Another man in similar costume sits atop gray horse and holds long lance. They are in a small clearing with water on the left and palm trees on the right and mountain background. FORBES CO. (Publisher, 19th Century) PORTRAIT OF THE STEAMSHIP “CITY OF BANGOR”. Large lithograph shows a twin stack steamer going right to left flying American flag off stern and ship flag off front mast. Bow “Boston & Bangor S.S. Co.”. A small lighthouse with sailboats is seen off port bow. Over 100 people are seen on its four decks. Housed in an oak frame with white matte (matte damaged). The Boston and Bangor Steamship Co. ran for 20 years between 1882 and 1902. The side-wheeler “City of Bangor” and its sister ship the side-wheeler “City of Rockland” were replaced by the turbine steamer “Camden” and the “Belfast”. SIGHT SIZE: 24” x 37-3/4”. OUTSTANDING CARVED AND PAINTED SHIP MODEL OF THE U.S.S. BELFAST. The Belfast, a turbine screw steamer, was built in Bath, Maine in 1909 and removed from service in 1935. Sister ship of the S.S. Camden. Model shows a three deck ship painted white with red and white hull. Two masts with two stacks. It was owned by the Eastern Steamship Co. Comes on wood base. FINE 19TH CENTURY “ELECTRA” HORSE AND ARROW WEATHERVANE. Arrow weathervane on one end, copper with flattened style full body trotting horse on the other. Gilt finish to horse. Housed in its original shaft with mercury type lightning rod ball affixed. This is signed “Electra”. Also spike top with sunburst with the letter “E” for the company. Mounting bracket on base still present. An unusual find to find complete. SIZE: Total is 40” h x 32” w. Horse is 14-1/2”; arrow is 16”. CONDITION: Very good. FINE ENGRAVED CLEAR GLASS RUMMER WITH 1825 COIN. The round bowl engraved with initials within a roundel with wheat and trailing vine at top and bottom. Opposite is a three mast ship with engraved name “Canopus 84?” in the roundel. Well defined ship flies British flag in full sail on wavy ocean. Flower vine and thistles at top and bottom. 18TH CENTURY SHEFFIELD TEA OR COFFEE URN. This is an early handmade plated coffee urn. The only touch mark or hallmark discernable was an impressed “D” on the inner lid of the cover. SIZE: 21″h (to top of urn) x 19-1/2″w (from handle to handle). CONDITION: Small amount of wear on the sharp edges of the silver plating and very minor denting. EARLY AMETHYST VASE. This vase, with square marble base and a brass colored frame receives a slip in morning glory shaped amethyst blown vase. Possibly New England Glass Company? 19TH CENTURY ARCHITECTURAL WATERCOLOR OF MAINE COTTAGE. A watercolor rendition of 19th or possibly early 20th century Maine cottage or home by the water features a number of figures indoors and in the dooryard, a flag pole on the front lawn flying a banner “Elmwood”, house surrounded by a white picket fence. CASED 19TH CENTURY JAPANESE IVORY EATING IMPLEMENTS. Utensils consist of an ivory handled knife and two metal tipped ivory chopsticks and a similar ivory handled tool with delicate blades on tip. The sheath covered with what appears to be some type of fish skin and set with two ivory toothpicks. SIZE: 12” l. LARGE EARLY IRONSTONE PLATTER WITH ORIENTAL MOTIF. This large cut-corner platter with Imari coloration features a decorative border and a central panel of bamboo trees and large blossoming flower. AN EARLY TOLE DECORATED COMPARTMENTALIZED TIN. This may be an early fishing tackle box. The only reason we say this is because originally there was a lot of old fishing tackle in it when it was discovered. The oval tin lid fitted with a Chippendale brass carrying handle, and when opened revealed compartmentalized fitted tray which removes to reveal another small fitted tray, two lidded sides which open to separate compartments, and a central portion with two round lidded cylinder tin canisters. The exterior painted with an old mustard yellow painted surface and remnants of the tole are stenciled grape motif on the lid. SIZE: 9 1/2” l x 7” w x 5 1/2” h. CONDITION: Retains 95% of the old mustard paint. The tole and stencil decoration on the lid are quite worn. Structurally, very nice. A very interesting piece. 9-96938 (400-500)

BOXED HAMILTON SHIP’S CHRONOMETER. The mahogany case opens to reveal a felt-lined interior in which is set another walnut or mahogany case fitted with a 2 3/4” round ship’s chronometer by Hamilton. The silver or nickel cased watch marked on reverse “U.S. Navy 5216”. The works are 21 jewels, with five adjusted positions, and serial #1260492. SIZE: Exterior box 7 1/4” w x 8 1/4” d x 5 1/4” h. FOLK ART SQUIRREL BOOKCASE. Obviously made for a youngster’s room in the early part of the 20th century. 18TH OR EARLY 19TH CENTURY RUSH OR CANING VISE. The vise with screw-down wooden clamps on either side is supported on four lathe turned legs with stretcher base. The clamps were used to hold the rush or cane while working the seats or backs of early chairs, constructed with early hand forged nails. ANTIQUE SPOONER BAROMETER OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS. Elongated form in walnut with ebony trim. The receptacle base with shaped wood. The dial at top with thermometer on right side and barometer on left side (mercury lacking in barometer). The small brass indicator on the left is missing. SIZE: 41” h x 4” w. TWO EARLY LIGHT SHIP SLATES. Two rectangular slates one with a wooden back stenciled “lightship # 42”. (This one originally was a double slate). The angled sides and straight front having an apron with half moon cutout and applied wood element. Turned legs ending in squared feet. EARLY WATERCOLOR BRADLEY FAMILY CREST. Early 19th Century. Half of the watercolor shows a large coat of arms of the Bradley family. The other half a written description of the families history including the time that they immigrated to American in 1660. Initially living in Fairfield and settling in Greenfield, then Deerfield. The last entry describes dying in Deerfield in 1798 leaving four sons and one daughter. Housed in what appears to be its original frame. CHARLES HARRY HUMPHRISS (American, 1867-1934)“APPEAL TO THE GREAT SPIRIT”. Outstanding large Indian bronze signed in base “Ch. Humphriss 1906”. Also foundry stamped “Roman Bronze Works N.Y.”. Bronze shows an Indian warrior wearing traditional leggings and waist cloth. Braided hair and two feathers in back. He stands tall with arms outstretched. He stands on a bronze rock outcropping. GERMANTOWN INDIAN RUG/BLANKET. Interesting design has center rectangular red area surrounded by dark and light brown areas. RARE PRATTWARE DECORATED PITCHER. Two sides decorated with a relief scene enclosed in a blue heart. At the bottom of each heart is a title 1) “Sportive Innocence” shows two girls standing beside each other. One holding a doll, the other a dogs’ leash. Set in a green landscape with blue stipple background. 2) “Mischievous Sport” shows two girls playing, one holds devil’s mask towards other child who has fallen backwards. Each heart has relief green branches encircling. Top rim has chain like decoration with blue feather design. Bottom has green leaves with white centers. SIZE: 6” h. RODOLFO CLAN…? 21 (Italian, 20th Century) FLYING BOAT AND SUBMARINE. Interesting large oil on canvas shows submarine on surface in rough seas with flying boat overhead. Several sailors are seen atop submarine. The Italian flying boat (twin hull Savoia-Marchetti SM. 55 X flying boat) was the crowning achievement of Italo Balbo, Benito Mussolini’s flamboyant Minister of Air. The signature is in the right hand corner and is dated “21”. It is hard to determine the last name. Housed in a black and gilt decorated replacement wood frame. SIZE: 27-3/4” x 39-1/2”. FINE SET OF FOUR DELAWARE RIVER VALLEY LADDERBACK CHAIRS. Four shaped graduated ladders. Tapered stiles ending in button finials, rush seats. Front Queen Anne style leg with pad feet. Just below chair rail is a finely turned bulb shaped turning, which is characteristic of Delaware River Valley chairs. Front stretcher has bulbous turning and double box stretcher elsewhere. Pinned fall front cover drops down to reveal seven drawers with central drawers having two back secret drawers. The lid has similar central ivory panel and line inlay as top.
