“REMEMBER THE MAINE” DECORATED MIRROR. Square notched mirror is housed in a press copper square frame with three hanging hooks. UNSIGNED (American, 19th/20th Century) THE FAMILY FARM. Oil on board primitive scene shows gray multi-window house surrounded by stone wall. Front pasture has small brook, pond with rowboat, cows and sheep. Man walk alongside oxen pulled cart. Man and child walk down path. Housed in a nice lemon gold frame. SIZE: 18” x 24”. Other, a beach scene with people and tree. Each signed “Virginia Gruppe”. Simple wood frame with off white matte. Virginia Gruppe was Charles Gruppe’s youngest child. Housed in its original molded wood frame. Back of canvas has wax application, which partially obscures a title and artist name. A very early work for this artist. SIZE: 18” x 20”. FRENCH LADIES “BONHEUR DU JOUR”. Ladies two part secretary has ebony finish with tortoise shell and brass inlay. Top section has brass gallery, two doors, which are slightly curved and two drawers. Side columns have ormolu mounts with figures. Bottom section has pullout writing surface, one large drawer. Four cabriole type legs, each mounted by large mount with woman’s head and scroll design. Each leg is terminated with a scroll mount. SIZE: 50-1/2” h x 30” w x 20” d. CONDITION: Restoration needed to inlay, shows chips and some inlay missing. 9-93726 (1,500-2,500)

FINE PAIR OF FIGURAL EUROPEAN SERVING SPOONS. One is hallmarked with a grape cluster and “A”. Its handle is made of a 4-1/2” woman in elegant dress on scrolled heart design that goes into an oblong bowl with leaf and grape decoration. Other spoon is almost identical with man blowing horn. It has hallmarked bowl, rampant lion, lion face, “aF” and makers’ mark “BM”. Appears to have repair to foot. WEIGHT: 9 Tr. Oz. SIZE: 10-1/2”. CONDITION: Very good. 9-93187 (150-250)

Scene shows trapper with rifle and horse peering over rocks at Indian campfire. No. 159 in the “Illustrated Checklist of Currier & Ives Print by Conningham”. Housed in a replaced gold and silver molded wood frame with white matte. Old label from “The Old Print Mart, New York City”. PRINT SIZE examined out of frame: 23-1/2” h x 31-3/4” w. SIGHT SIZE within matte: 21-1/2” x 29-1/2”. CONDITION: Some tear restoration to margins. Restored tears can be seen at midpoint on each side and a large “U” shaped tear at top center. NATHANIEL CURRIER-PUBLISHER (American, 1813-1888) “THE LIFE OF A FIREMAN, THE FIRE-NOW THEN WITH A WILL-SHAKER HER UP BOYS!” Large folio lithograph by N. Currier dated 1854. Scene shows many fireman with apparatus fighting a large building fire. Strong colors with bright oranges, blues, etc. No. 3515 “Illustrated Checklist Currier & Ives Prints by Conningham”. Housed in its original twig carved deep walnut frame with gold liner. SIGHT SIZE: 21-1/4” x 29-1/2”. CONDITION: Vertical foxing lines and other brown toning and foxing to print. UNSIGNED (American/French, 18th Century) PORTRAIT OF A GENTLEMAN AUTHOR. Fine oil on canvas portrait of a middle age gentleman seated in a red upholstered chair at a writing table. He wears a green coat, flower decorated shirt with white tunic. One hand holds a quill pen and he is writing on a white piece of paper with French words “La Ville de…”. Beside his other hand is a leather covered book with more written pages. Housed in a fine lemon gold carved wood frame. Miller Frame Galleries New York label on the back. SIZE: 29” x 22”. RARE AND IMPORTANT INLAID FEDERAL CARD TABLE SIGNED I+S (JACOB SANDERSON, SALEM, MASS.). Square tapered legs with inlaid ankle band. Top with elliptical front and half serpentine ends. Mahogany with figured birch used in center oval and panels at top of legs. Curly-grained satinwood veneers used in skirt. Oval central panel is surrounded by rosewood veneers. Top has rosewood band and line inlay. Rosewood band at bottom of skirt. Underneath top has painted in black paint “I+S”. Appears to have old chalk? Jww. REFERENCE No.1: Page 330, No. 300 in “American Furniture The Federal Period by Charles F. Montgomery”. In his description of this table, he mentions and attributed this signature to Jacob Sanderson. The table pictured may well be this table. REFERENCE No.2: Page 294, “American Cabinet Makers by William C. Ketchum, Jr.”. Mentions a card table with this signature under Jacob Sanderson. SIZE: 29-1/4” x 35-1/2” w x 16-3/4” d. CONDITION: Front ankle inlays have missing parts. One small old 1” patch to left back corner. CAST ZINC GILT HORSE WEATHERVANE. Ethan Allen style horse in running position stands on metal rod with gold ball. Presently mounted on a rectangular slab of granite. Unknown maker. SIZE: 18” l. UNSIGNED (American, 19th Century) PORTRAIT OF ISABELLA LOVELACE. Oil on canvas portrait shows a folk art rendering of a small girl in a white lace dress. Curly blonde hair and blue eyes. She sits atop a blue upholstered ottoman. Hands in lap with two fingers showing possibly indicating her age. Housed in a period deep, lemon gold frame with brass corner ornaments. Accompanying this lot is her marriage certificate dated 1879 in the state of New York. Also pictures of her and her husband are included. She died in 1921 and was the mother of Edna Eckert Benson. CHARLES SHANG WHEELER (American, 1872-1949) PREENING DUCK AND DUCK HUNTING. Pen and ink drawing in horizontal oval form showing a duck standing at the edge of a marsh with marsh grass, its head turned backwards and bill nested in back feathers. The rectangular matte with oval window has ink drawing of two men hunting hitting one of three ducks in flight. In the distance is a lighthouse which we believe is the along the CT coast. Matte is signed “Shang” in a small picture of a hand holding five cards. Housed in a stained walnut frame. On back of frame there is a penned provenance indicating that they were given to Jacob Huber as payment for a loan and descended in the family to Barbara B. Johnson. SIGHT SIZE OF OVAL: 7” x 10-3/4”. ANTONIO JACOBSEN (American, 1850-1921) PORTRAIT OF THE STEAMSHIP CZARITZA. Large oil on board of the twin stack steamer Czaritza of the Russian/American ship line. This wide painting is taken up almost entirely by the ship (50”). Ship sails right to left and has a black hull and white upper decks. Two masts, one having American flag and the other having the Russian flag. Also, a large Russian flag flies astern and at smaller one at the bow. There are nine lifeboats and thirty-seven people shown on decks. Smoke comes from two white stacks and ship cuts through a wavy blue and green sea. Blue sky with puffy white clouds with darker clouds off the stern. Signed lower right “Antonio Jacobsen 1915”. Housed in a gold gesso decorated frame, which has damage. SIZE: 29-1/2” x 59-3/4”. CONDITION: This painting is in original untouched condition. It is in need of restoration, predominately in major areas where the brown of the board is showing through. VICTOR CLYDE FORSYTHE (American, 1885-1962) ORIGINAL ARTWORK FOR WWII POSTER. Lot of three works including the original pencil sketch, colored oil painting and photographic print. Forsythe was an illustrator and cartoonist who was a staff artist for the New York World covering news events with his drawings. His best known poster is “And They Thought We Couldn’t Fight”. He later moved to California and shared a studio with Frank Tenney Johnson and produced western paintings. 1) Oil on paper of the finished poster in triptych form. Central panel shows central figure of a soldier amongst the horrors of war. Depicted in this panel are the Japanese and German forces against the allied forces. Fighting is in the air and on the ground. Left smaller panel shows a European home with family and man tilling the soil with horse in a tranquil pre-war setting. Corresponding right panel depicts the ruined home, dead horse and grave markers in distance. One assumes the family in portrayed in the left part of the central panel dead or dying is asking for help. Signed “C.F.” in right corner. OUTSTANDING CARVED FALL FRONT DESK/CABINET ON STAND. Oak top section has three drawers over a drop front door. The drawers are faced with carved heads. The left and right drawers, when taken out, hide a side long secret drawer. There are also two secret drawers in between the three drawers. Front door has decorative ironwork and central panel with Shakespeare and seated figures. Interior has ten drawers with central door, each drawer with deep carved scene with men. Central door, which is locked, has carved seated figure. Front lid is flanked by two full carved figures. Side panels have relief carved figures. Side panel has signature Magarinos Santiago. Piece appears to have been made in the first quarter of the 20th Century. Open trestle type base appears to be a later addition.
