LARGE CABINET PHOTO OF AN EARLY LODGE FEATURING A GROUP OF TEN FLY FISHERMEN W/BAMBOO RODS STANDING IN FRONT. Written on old pencil script on the reverse is “Samoset Hotel”. This was found on the Maine coast and believed to possibly be the very first Samoset hotel, built in Rockport, Maine. The Samoset Resort, built in the 19th Century, has burned and been rebuilt on at least one occasion and was, during the early 20th Century and still is today, one of the finest resort complexes on the coast of Maine. FOUR COIN SILVER SPOONS BY THOMAS BARTON SIMPKINS (1724-1804). Three 4 3/4″ spoon marked with a square hallmark T.S. On the back of each bowl is what appears to be 3/4 of a sand dollar. Top of each spoon is engraved M.S. One has an additional letter. In addition there is a 6″ spoon which has a hallmark T. Simpkins with the same sand dollar, this one has on the back of the top initials K.S. to M.R. Oct. 26, 1774. One small spoon has crease in bowl, otherwise very good. 9-92039 (200-400)

18TH CENTURY QUEEN ANNE TIGER MAPLE SECRETARY. This secretary was recently discovered in Mass. It has the unusual feature of being one piece. The entire case is made of curly maple. Three graduated drawers. Drop front lid with interior having 6 cubbyholes and five drawers. Two raised panel doors above with separated compartment. High bracket base. Two board back with white writing “W. Weatley?”. Secondary wood is chestnut. Possibly RI or eastern CT. Brasses have been replaced with a fine set of appropriate reproduction period brasses. OUTSTANDING CARVED AND PAINTED FOLK ART OWL DECOY. This fantastic carving shows a whitish owl with black feather highlights perched atop a small wood base. Inset carved eyes are painted gold and black. Fine sculpted beak, feet, ears, and tail feathers. Mounted with a brass fitting which fits onto a dowel placed in a round block. A wonderful piece of folk art. Provenance: This piece was sold at the first cataloged James D. Julia Decoy auctions in the early 1980’s. OUTSTANDING DOUBLE SHAKER BOX WITH SIEVE IN GREEN PAINT. We are told that this is a seed box. This oval box has two tiers with horsehair sieve in between. One side is smaller than the other side. FABULOUS GILT AND PAINTED LYRE SHEET METAL SILHOUETTE. Interesting wall hanging has well fashioned lyre which is gilt and then overpainted in brown in German and dated 1842. Edges are highlighted in brown paint with a wonderful patina. Painted on both sides, could have hung so it could be viewed on both sides. This originated from an old German church in Waldoboro, ME. PAIR OF EARLY EMERALD GREEN WHALE OIL LAMPS. These dark emerald green lamps mounted on marble feet with #2 pewter colors. SIZE: 9-1/2″ h. CONDITION: One lamp is badly damaged with a bruise and a crack at the top of the font. The other lamp is generally very good to excellent condition. OUTSTANDING FOLK ART HESSIAN SOLIDER WHIRLIGIG IN ORIGINAL BLUE, RED, AND WHITE PAINT. This whirligig was found in a local Maine attic and is a wonderful and important discovery. Soldier is dressed in blue pants with red coat and white shirt, what appears to be blue, black, and red hat. Arms extend to 8″ shaped metal knife blades. Coat has tuxedo type tail which is made of separate piece of wood that is screwed onto rear. Face has two little holes for eyes and nose protrudes from face which has piece pinned to it. Small cutout mouth. Its original paint and interesting folk art form make this a extremely desirable piece to the most discriminating collector. SIZE: 17 3/4″ h x 7 3/4″ at shoulders. DESIRABLE PARIS HILL MAINE DECORATED SIX-BOARD CHEST. This early 19th century six-board chest retains its original rosewood red and black artificial grain decoration. IMPORTANT LARGE PENCIL DRAWING OF “RESIDENCE OF BARNHARD SCHRADER, CANAL FULTON LAWRENCE TP. STARK CO. OHIO 1888” BY FERDINAND A. BRADER (1833-). Drawing shows panoramic view of large farmstead with connected buildings, barns, fields, and livestock including sheep, horses, cows, chickens, turkeys, etc. Two men with horse drawn plows tend fields. Title in bottom border. Signed lower left and numbered 548. Housed in an antique period burl walnut frame with gold liner. Brader emigrated to Pennsylvania and then on to Ohio. His Ohio drawings were done during the decade 1885-1895. “Brader’s drawings are prized for their large scale, fine execution, and warm detailed transcription of rural 19th century life”. EXCEPTIONAL GEORGE III PAINTED WOODEN DOLL. This doll circa 1770 has painted rouged cheeks, and black pupil-less eyes with dotted lashes and brows. Real hair wig. The torso slightly tapering at waist.. Squared hips and legs jointed at knees and hips. Cloth upper arms and wooden forearms with long squared fingers. 19TH CENTURY TIN TOLE DECORATED DOCUMENT BOX. This domed top document box features brightly colored large round red flowers on the front panel ornamented with green leaves and yellow fanciful sprigs. Each of the side panels and the lid are decorated with mustard yellow decoration. SIZE: 9″ l x 5″ w x 4″h. Old and possibly original early painted frame. This portrait is similar and may be by the same hand as portrait sold in our gallery August 25, 1994 as number 27 in that sale. FINE LARGE ADAM & EVE PICTORIAL SCHOOL GIRL SAMPLER . Strawberry vine border with top corners having white doves. Four alpha-numeric rows over “The Ten Commandments In Verse” which are set in two columns. Next is a verse “The Desire” which has three long lines. Next is a two-line verse which is situated on either side of a large apple tree. Bottom of tree has the serpent eating from Eve’s hand and Adam on other side. Four other trees with white doves atop, two baskets of fruit and other small bushes. Housed in a thin wood frame. Note attached to back indicates this sampler was done by a member of the Lewis Family and was buried during two wars – the Civil War and the War of 1812- on the family estate “Towles Point” Lancaster, Virginia. SIGNED SHIPS PASSAGE DOCUMENT BY ANDREW JACKSON. Heavy parchment paper has engraving of ship and another of lighthouse and town. This presidential document is for the schooner Penobscot of Bucksport. OUTSTANDING AND AWARD WINNING RUSSIAN MADE SHIP MODEL OF THE H.M.S. BOUNTY. Valara Puchkov of Petrozavodsk made this boat in the 1990’s. It came in 1st place in two national competitions (papers included). Scale is 1/35, this is a absolute true to scale hand built, hand crafted model. The model maker made every part from scratch including the wax candles for the rear lanterns. He turned the brass for the canons, exceptional linen sails, painted flags, anchor, rigging, the finest detail including wood, metal, and fabric. There may not be a finer well-crafted example made. Winning 1st prizes in Russian competition, designates the most highly skilled craftsmanship. Paperwork is included which shows the competition scores, and certificates. OUTSTANDING RUSSIAN MADE SHIP MODEL A POMORSKAYA KOCH (SEA COACH). Valara Puchkov of Petrozavodsk made this boat in the 1990’s. This model was entered into one competition of which it scored 89.33. It comes with a history of this type of boat and plans. The ship has one mast with one sail. The rigging is set in working order, plank model with extremely detailed deck features. Everything is handcrafted including items in the bottom cabin which include the blessed icon, stove, and other items which can be seen through a cut away in the deck. MAGNIFICENT AND IMPORTANT OIL ON CANVAS OF THE SIDE-WHEELER THOMAS P. WAY BY JAMES BARD (1815-1897). Painting shows side-wheeler sailing right to left flying flags and in motion. The ship takes up most of the length of the canvas and has a backdrop of luministic sky with hills as background. This painting comes to us handed down from its original owner through the family. The painting is signed by James Bard in the lower right hand corner “Drawn & painted by James S. Bard, N.Y. 1860 152 Perry St.”. This painting dates from the midpoint of James career. A point at which his most memorable work was produced. Thomas P. Way was a livestock merchant New York’s Washington Market and was one of the original stockholders in the Keyport (New Jersey) and Middletown Steamboat Company, owners of Thomas P. Way. She was enrolled in July of 1859 and sold in August to the Staten Island & New York Ferry Company, -for a profit. Way himself died in 1863. There are two versions of Thomas P. Way by Bard, one dated 1859 is inscribed “Built by Terry at Keyport, 1859.” This version, dated 1860, would have been executed for another client, possibly for an executive with the ferry company. Thomas P. Way ran until 1888 when she burned at a Newark, New Jersey dock. One of the finest fresh Bard side-wheelers to come on the market in many years. IMPORTANT AND RARE CHIPPENDALE BALL AND CLAW FOOT MAHOGANY TESTER BED. Front two posts are stop-fluted which ends in ring turnings. Well carved knee with leaf carving. Small punch and stipple decoration around carved leaves, large ball with long carved talons. Top of post has ring turning with square-block top continuing to a simple turning. Brass end caps over bolt holes. Foot board posts are tapered octagon-carved. Simple pine head board may be replacement. This bed comes from a fine home in Bangor, Maine. EARLY 18TH CENTURY AMERICAN GATE LEG TABLE. This fine 18th Century American gate leg table features a great block and turned decorated base, having swing legs with oval drop leaf top and fitted with one full-length dovetailed drawer. FINE AND RARE 18TH CENTURY ENGLISH BRACKET CLOCK BY GEORGE GRAHAM, LONDON. This outstanding bracket clock features a handsomely carved ornamental mahogany case. The dial with applied filigreed gilded ornamentation, having a toned silver large dial and smaller dial above, each having black lettering. The backside of the words with scrolled ornamental engraved design and again, signed “G. Graham, London”. Clockworks fitted with striking bell and a chiming mechanism consisting of 8 bells. Complete with key and pendulum. George Graham was one of the finest clock makers of the 18th century. He held membership in the Royal Society and he is credited with the invention of the Orrery. EXTREMELY RARE AND IMPORTANT PILGRIM CENTURY WHITE PINE TRESTLE TABLE. With hinged top containing a large compartment beneath with double removable stretchers. The table has provision for a hanging drawer or shelf which fitted just under the compartment beneath the lid. Circa late 17th or early 18th century. This is the table shown in Wallace Nutting’s “Furniture of the Pilgrim Century”, and is illustrated on page 356 referred to as a kitchen table in pine. According to John M. Graham II in a letter written May 21, 1969, who wrote regarding this table “The wood specimen you sent has been identified as eastern white pine. Your table is probably Pennsylvania in origin…” Mr. Graham was, at this time, Vice President & Director of Collections at Colonial Williamsburg. SIZE: 30 1/2″h x 49″l x 37 1/2″w. OUTSTANDING AND EXCEEDINGLY RARE STE OF 6 TEN-SPINDLE BOW-BACK WINDSOR SIDE CHAIRS. These unusual ten-spindle chairs came form Limington, Maine. They originally came out of one of the earliest homes in that area and probably originated there. Chair backs have four front-pinned spindles at the top of hoop. Hoop has carved groove edges. Well carved saddle seats, bamboo turned legs and stretchers. Presently no paint but evidence of red paint. SIZE: 36 1/2″h. CONDITION: One 1/2″ lower than the others. OUTSTANDING AND IMPORTANT WATERCOLOR, INK, AND NEEDLEWORK DOUBLE MEMORIAL BY ALIDA DUNBAR. Needlework picture is framed behind a reverse painted black and gold edged piece of glass with name of maker at bottom. Gilt early frame. Picture shows large central three door building with two spires and blue roof. Urn topped memorial stones have writing as follows: “In memory of Mary Graverat died 6 February 1797 aged 55 years and 6 months”. Other has “In memory of Henry Graverat died 15th August 1802 aged 64 years 7 months and 3 days”. Girl is shown at each stone grieving. Large trees on sides, right one is large weeping willow. Flowers fence gate trees and hillside are included in picture. This sampler closely resembles a group that has been linked to Albany, New York. This large masonic Liverpool picture decorated with three panels, one side decorated with masonic symbols “memen to mori”, then beneath the spout, various masonic symbols “holiness to the Lord”. The back panel, with the masonic eye and “The world is in pain, our secrets to gain but still let them wonder and gaze on for they neer can divine the world nor the sign of a free and an excepted mason”. MAGNIFICENT CENTENNIAL HANDMADE HEPPLEWHITE BURL WOOD TAMBOUR SECRETARY. This high style secretary is a stunning beauty. With spectacular veneered light wood burl contrasted by bands of various dark wood burl. Secretary is in two parts, the top with two glass mullion doors, which open to reveal shelves, the top of the glass doors with handsome reverse painted panels. The lower section of the top having two tambour doors which slide open to reveal a pigeon holed and drawer compartments. Between the two tambour compartments is one rectangular burl paneled door that opens to reveal similar compartments. The base with a drop down board writing surface above three full-length drawers. This secretary is made up of old wood and unless scrutinized very carefully, appears from almost all aspects to be a period secretary. In fact, it is definitely a cabinet piece probably made during the late 19th century. Hand constructed of outstanding quality. OUTSTANDING OVER THE MANTLE PAINTING ON PANEL OF ALLEGORICAL SCENE BY JOSEPH H. HIDLEY (1830-1872). Fine oil on panel painting is recessed in a grain painted wood panel. A frame has been attached to the top, which may or may not be original. The scene shows a large sailing ship in choppy sea with large lighthouse, buildings and mountains. The foreground is a man holding a paddle with small rowboat. A letter of history accompanies lot indicating that this is one of the twelve oil on wood paintings he was commissioned to paint for a home in the town of Brunswick, NY. The graining that is used on this painting was used throughout the house. He did ten, which went under the windows in the parlors and dining room. Two went in front of the mantles in the dining room and living room. One painting (Noah’s Ark) was sold to the Abbey Aldrich Rockefeller Art Institute in the 1940’s. RARE 18TH C. NEW ENGLAND MAHOGANY TALL CASE CLOCK BY JOHN BAILEY. Bailey, of Hanover, Mass, was a clockmaker and the father of three sons who were clockmakers: John II, Calvin, and Lebbeus. John Sr. was known to have made wooden works clocks as well as metal works clocks as was John II. The painted metal dial with green and gilt decorative design retains most of its original paint and is signed simply “John Bailey”, therefore we are uncertain whether this was the father (1730-1810) or the son (1751-1823). The case is mahogany with quarter columns and cutout Heppelwhite base. The crest surmounted by three brass balls. This piece descended through a family near Farmington, Maine. SIZE: 7′ 7″ t. RARE 19TH CENTURY INDIAN BIRCH BARK QUILL DECORATED CANOE. The totally handmade root-lashed canoe is ornamented on each side with sprigs (probably representing balsam boughs), maple leaves and a beaver. RARE GENUINE ELMER CROWELL ANTIQUE CARVED HALF-SIZED MALLARD DECOY. This outstanding half-sized carved and painted decoy was executed by Elmer Crowell of East Harwich, Mass. Crowell is recognized as one of the world’s finest decoy carvers ever. He produced both gunning decoys to be used in marshes and eventually, because of the great demand, began carving decorative decoys and bird carvings that he sold himself directly to sports. Some of which were marketed through such famed sporting houses as Abercrombie & Fitch. Most any Crowell carving in excellent condition will bring multiple thousands of dollars. Currently, the most expensive decoy ever sold in the world was a Crowell carved goose, which brought $684,500. This decoy carries both Elmer Crowell’s oval brand as well as his rectangular brand on the underside. Decoy has slightly turned head and carved design in the tail. SIZE: Approx. 11″ l. RED BREASTED MERGANSER DECOY BY JOSEPH LINCOLN OF ACCORD, MASS. Lincoln is one of the world’s premier antique decoy carvers. Approximately ten years ago, a wood duck by this famous artist in excellent condition sold for around a quarter of a million dollars. The merganser, one of the most popular species among collectors, in original painted condition has brought as much as forty to fifty thousand dollars. SIZE: 18″ l. RARE EARLY CAST IRON CANVAS BACK SINK BOX DECOY FROM NORTH CAROLINA. Late in the 19th Century, sink boxes were special boats that floated nearly level with the surface of the water. The hunter would lie down inside the boat with decoys all around him in the water and wait until he could lure ducks within shooting range. Heavy cast iron, decoy-shaped weights were placed on the flat outside edges of the boat that would help hold the boat at water level, but also, while the hunter was moored, waiting for ducks, these would help lure the ducks in. This cast iron weight was used at the Gooseville Gun Club in Rodanthe, NC late in the 19th C. and is currently painted black. SIZE: Approx. 13″ l. OUTSTANDING CARVED AND PAINTED WARD BROS. MALLARD DECOY FROM CRISFIELD, MARYLAND. The Ward Brothers were two simple and charming country characters from Crisfield, MD. They began carving in the first quarter of the 20th C. and continued to carve and paint until their death in the late 20th C. They are probably two of the most famous decoy carvers in the world. A museum is named for them and an international carving competition that takes place in Maryland carries their name. Their hunting decoys are highly sought after by sportsmen from all over North America and their decorative decoys are equally in demand. This is an example of their decorative work. Its head is turned at a lifelike 45-degree angle. Its form and paint patternation clearly indicates why they became so extremely popular. This is signed and dated by “1971 L.T. Ward Brothers, Crisfield, Maryland. Len Ward, Steve Ward”. This was a decorative bird and meant to ornament a mantelpiece. SIZE: 18″ l. EARLY CARVED GUS WILSON, MONHEGAN-STYLE SCOTER DECOY. Gus Wilson was a lighthouse keeper in South Portland, Maine. He spent his days carving seabirds, which he watched in the surf around him. His early style of decoys, known as the Monhegan Island style, is his most appealing and desirable decoys produced by him. This has a slightly turned head and typical Wilson carved eyes with relief wing carving. As is the case with most early Wilson decoys, this has a very old “in use” repaint. Provenance: Original collector’s notes indicate that this was bought from Mrs. Grace Chapin of Chatham, Cape Cod, July 1960. SIZE: 18″ l. RARE DECORATIVE WIDGEN DRAKE DECOY BY PATRICK R. GODIN. This extraordinary decorative carving of a widgen drake was carved for the North American Wild Fowl Carving Competition in 1985 and is so inscribed on the underside. This carving is in outstanding form and features raised carved wing feathers. It depicts the bird with the head turned at a 45-degree angle and mouth open in a calling pose. SIZE: 16″ l. GREAT FOLK ART WALL BOX “THE DELAWARE HUNTER’S LIFE”. This three-compartment wall box all in natural finish features hand carved and applied ornamentation. It depicts, first, at the top, a hunter stalking birds in a tree. Next, his wife carrying the purse. In the final compartment, both the hunter with his dog and the wife with her cat in old age. A tag from the original collector indicates “Delaware River Life!!! He plays, she scolds and carries the purse, then grow old together, Amen”. SIZE: Approx. 20″ t. BEAUTIFUL WATERCOLOR OF A FISHING SCENE BY BRENT J. SMITH. Smith, an American, is one of the nation’s leading contemporary sport fishing artists. His works are obviously influenced by Ogden Pleissner and A.L. Ripley. This is extremely appealing and his works have been used for the covers of “Sporting Classics”, “Gray’s Shooting Sporting Journal”, “Wildlife Art News”, “Gulf Tide”, “Louisiana Conservationists” and “Ducks Unlimited” magazines as well as hanging in some of the foremost collections in the country. He was named Artist of the Year by the Atlantic Salmon Federation for the year 2000. This fabulous scene depicts a sportsman landing a large fish with a guide looking on. LATE 19TH/EARLY 20TH CENTURY MODEL OF A “CAT BOAT”. This small hand made model of a “cat boat” found in Long Island features a receding center board and brass rudder. The deck scribed to simulate planking in what appears to be the original paint. “Cat boats” were working boats in the Chesapeake Bay and Long Island for men who worked in salt water. TWO DOOR NEW YORK STATE CUPBOARD IN BLUE/GREEN PAINT. Nice size with two paneled doors which open to reveal three shelves. Paint is a light bluish green which one side has a darker apple green underneath, which is evident on the side which was against the wall. SIZE: 62 1/4″ h x 47″ w x 20 1/2″ d. UNUSUAL FOLK ART HOOKED RUG OF BLACK LABRADORS. Certainly the first we’ve ever had with this species. This whimsical hand hooked rug depicts two black labs, one reclining, and one standing against a white picket fence with landscape background including cottage. Large red flowers planted along fence, with black border. Professionally mounted on cloth and wood stretcher frame suitable for hanging. Probably early 20th C. SIZE: 23″ x 43″. OUTSTANDING FOLK ART BLACK MINSTREL SIGN. Painted sign is in the form of a house with the letters “THE LEROY MINSTRELS” up and down the peak of the roof. A large central black figure playing a banjo and singing with wide open mouth. In the background is a cloud strewn starry sky with landscape having one white building. Unsigned. The painting is on what appears to be an early masonite, which has a stretcher structure to the back. This comes from New York State. SIZE: 35″ x 40″. WONDERFUL FOLK ART BLACK CARVED ROOT CANE. This great late 19th or early 20th century carved root cane features the head of an animated smiling black man; his teeth are set with tiny pieces of bone, his eyes appear to be bone or ivory inserts also painted, features are highlighted in paint – both the lips, hair etc. SIZE: 35″ long. CONDITION: Generally good. Paint shows wear on high points and a minor loss on the underside of the chin of some filler material used in the making of the cane. OUTSTANDING AND RARE WOOTON STYLE GRAIN PAINTED DESK. In researching this desk, we could not find reference to a non-hardwood Wooton desk made by the Wooton Factory. This may have been a factory special order or a copy from a Maine cabinetmaker. Its style is reminiscent of country furniture with the function of a high style desk. The desk originates from the Kingfield, Maine area and is purported to have descended from the founder of Kingfield, Maine and the Winters Family. Mustard and brown grain painting. Desk has carved gallery top, two large swinging doors, one holds 40 square compartments, the other, 15 compartments. Interior has multi-drawer compartments and letter files. Pierced carved interior fretwork, fold down writing surface, all supported on two trestle type legs. SIZE: 58″h x 35 1/2″w x 21″d. PAIR OF EARLY DECORATED NEW ENGLAND FIN BACK CHAIRS. This highly ornamental pair with tagged arrow-shaped spats and latticework backrest features an original pastel green paint with free-hand vining flower and leaf decoration with bamboo base. The underside of one has a large chalk inscription, probably a signature (?). SIZE: 18″ to top of seat, 33-1/2″ to top of back. CONDITION: One has a portion of the latticework replaced. RARE NEW ENGLAND SHERATON WORK OR TAVERN TABLE IN ORIGINAL RED PAINT WITH SCRUB TOP. Base has straight skirts mortised in to four tapering ring-turned and reeded legs ending in half-ball feet. Top is one board with bread-board ends. Unusual form t find in this condition. Top was single nailed or pegged, presently detached. SIZE: Base 21″w x 35″. Top size 42 1/2″ x 2 1/4″. PALACE SIZE ANTIQUE ORIENTAL RUG. This rare oversized carpet has several areas of wear, particularly one 3′ square area. It has consistent pile elsewhere. Center medallion with five other medallions in a rose colored field with many different shades of coloring. Large border has medallions with peacocks and others with flowers. RARE STEP BACK CUPBOARD IN ORIGINAL BLUE PAINT WITH BLACK SPONGING. Cupboard has been scraped down to its original paint. One-piece construction with four shelf top and two doors below. Top and bottom board missing. This cupboard was originally found with two doors and molding which has been added. They have been taken off. Found on the coast of Maine, probably where it originated. FANTASTIC FOLK ART WHIMSY CARVED WOODEN TOY OF ARTICULATING CAT AND MOUSE. Toy has long stick with attached sliding stick, which is hooked into the back legs of a long legged cat. A jointed mouse sits atop. As you slide the stick the cat moves as the mouse sits atop. There is little leather saddle, carved and painted faces. WONDERFUL WATERCOLOR SHIP PORTRAIT OF THE SCHOONER “CARIAD” OF CARNARVON BY LUIGI P. RENAULT (1845-1910). Watercolor shows a two-mast schooner in full sail going from left to right. Black hull with name on bow. Four crewmembers on deck, ship flies Canadian flag off stern and other flags fly off masts. In background is steamer and what appears to be a whale tail. Signed lower left “Renault Leghorn”. Watercolor is mounted on paper with thin gold border. Below watercolor states “Schooner “Cariad” of Carnarvon. E. L. Jones Master 1896″. Housed in a carved oak frame with gold liner and gray matte. Renault was an Italian ship portraitist working at Leghorn in the third quarter of the 19th Century. OUTSTANDING EARLY WATERCOLOR OF SHIPS AT ANCHOR BY LUDOLF BACKHUYSEN (1631-1709). Watercolor is monogrammed with initals in right corner, left corner has what might be a location. Scene shows two principal boats side by side with several other boats in background. Calm sea with white clouds and blue sky. We believe this to be a study for a major oil painting. It has penciled grid lines approximately 1″ both horizontally and vertically. The flag flying off the main ship indicates Rotterdam port. CASED SHIP’S BINNACLE FROM THE CLIPPER FLYING CLOUD. Large compass has paper compass points held with light string on central pin encompassed by a heavy metal housing. Mahogany case with glass top for viewing has descriptive brass plate in Spanish indicating that this is the compass from the Flying Cloud. The Flying Cloud was launched n 1851 at the shipyard of Donald McKay E. Boston, Mass. 208 Feet long and held several records including New York to San Francisco in 89 days 8 hours. OUTSTANDING AND RARE LARGE BRASS TERRESTRIAL/CELESTIAL TELESCOPE WITH STAND AND CASE BY J. P. DANCER, MANCHESTER. This extraordinary 19th century telescope is an extremely rare piece of astrological equipment in both its quality and its great size. Its purpose is to follow stars across the sky. Its shaft is solid brass and has several different lens. It is fully adjustable and stands on an equatorial mount with a parallel fixed axis. Ideal for following stars across the night sky. Adjustable dials and two hook arms for fine adjustments. Also a sighting scope. Fully collapsible base of mahogany, which has a wonderful patina. Original brass cupped feet. Original wood case with label of John B. Dancer Optical, Mathematical, & Philosophical Instrument Manufacture 43 Cross Street King Street Manchester. It also has a paper label indicating the different eye pieces and what they should be used for. This is an outstanding example of a very rare telescope.
