BERNARD KARFIOL (American, 1886-1952) “NUDE ON RED COUCH”. Outstanding oil on canvas interior scene shows a young nude woman laying on a red sofa with colorful throws. Attached to the stretcher is a “The Downtown Gallery New York exhibition label with title and artist. Also several other numbers on the frame and stretcher. A very similar painting is titled “Hilda 1929” and is in the collection of the Whitney Museum of American Art and is illustrated in their American Artist Series “Bernard Karfiol” by Jean Slusser, 1931. WALDO PEIRCE (American, 1884-1970) BOOK, LETTER AND ENVELOPE. An interesting lot of three pieces which relate to each other. Book: Waldo Peirce by Margit Varga New York, The Hyperion Press Harper & Brothers 1941. The book includes its original jacket which is as is. The inside cover and first page have a watercolor painting of a lighthouse and buildings on a small island with coastline, boats and seagulls. Points of land are labeled “Campobello – New Brunswick” and another. It is inscribed in upper left corner “A. Dorotea (alias Lieut. …) Waac 1 April 43…”. The title page with pasted on square 6” x 6-1/2” watercolor showing Waldo Peirce kneeling on a beach in front of a woman in military outfit with her Company behind. She or he appears to be presenting this book. Signed “WP April 43”. Accompanying the book is a framed letter and envelope which correspond to the book and is a letter to Dorotea. The letter explains that he is doing the book watercolor for her and explains some of the picture to her. He signs it “Waldo” and it is dated “March 31st, 1943”. The envelope addressed to Dorothy with a small watercolor of a hand with a glass. The letter is in good condition with folds and some browning. Envelope is good and the frame has a Goodspeed’s Book Shop Inc. label affixed to back. PROVENANCE: Goodspeed’s Book Shop to present consignor. SIZE: Book is 13” x 10”. Several ships and smaller boats are seen on calm water. All seen under a blue and cloud sky with rising sun. The painting is housed in a fine gesso decorated gilt frame which may be original. FRANCISCO JOSE DE GOYA Y LUCIENTES (Spanish, 1746-1828) “LOS CAPRICHOS”. Rare and complete set of 80 plates bound into a volume with plate No. 1 as cover. We believe this to be the Ninth Edition, made in the Calcografia for the Real Academia 1908-1912. The edition was limited to 180 copies and was issued in a cream pasteboard cover with self portrait on the front. PROVENANCE: Ex-Collection, Library of Waldo Peirce. Each page measures 13-1/2” x 9-1/2”. SIZE: Book is 13-3/4” x 10-1/2”. CONDITION: Binding has splits, the plates have varying degrees of foxing. There are no tears and the images are bold and clear. GROUP OF THULIN ARCHIVAL PHOTOGRAPHS AND DRAWINGS. The lot includes: twelve photographs, three original drawings, a copy of a newspaper illustration, a business card with envelope and newspaper obituary. Photographs include five frames; a carved baptismal; two ornate religious frames; a carved lift top chest; a photograph of Thulin at Niagara Falls; an outstanding photograph of a carvers workshop early in Thulin’s career and probably Montreal, Canada; a photograph of Thulin’s workshop with inventory which shows various frames, a carved baptismal, blanket chest, two church chairs and frame in progress. Oil on zinc interior scene shows a marble alcove with a four level round birdcage that has been opened and a green parrot is being held on the right hand of a young woman who is feeding it with her left hand. A girl is holding a plate of food that the young lady is picking from. A decorative carpet is draped over the alcove. A green drape is pulled back on a nail. There is very nice detail to the lady’s dress and facial features. Remnants of an old label which is illegible on the reverse. Housed in a later 19th Century gesso decorated frame with gilt liner. ATTRIBUTED TO FRANZ FRANCKEN, THE YOUNGER (Flemish, 1581-1642) CHRIST WITH THE MONEY CHANGERS IN THE TEMPLE. Oil on wood panel scene shows Christ next to a man with large hat with crown and beard. He points to a side alter with gold coins and bag. A number of other well dressed gentleman are seen behind him in a fancy interior setting. An arched open window looks out to castle and landscape. A monkey is seen in right corner, a small boy in red outfit and dagger in left. Housed in a good stained and gilt molded wood frame. Back of the panel has two 1-1/2” red wax seals. PROVENANCE: Gittelson Gallery 1950; Guttman Gallery frame. Sold by James D. Julia, Inc. August 3rd, 1995 from the collection of Joseph & Hazel Marcus. AFTER SALOMON KONINCK (Dutch, 1609-1656) “PORTRAIT OF A BURGOMASTER”. Oil on wood panel shows a portrait of an elderly gentleman in a rich black velvet robe and a black broad rim hat. He wears a gold chain and medallion. His right hand rests upon an open book on the table beside him. This portrait is very much in the style of Rembrandt. Back of the panel has a cutout old catalog entry indicating the painting was from the Goldschmidt Collection, Paris and has a wax seal indicating it is from the collection of E. Fischhof, Paris. There also is a penned label indicating artist and number “741”. Housed in a fine gesso decorated gilt modern frame with velvet and gold liner. Probably a fine 19th Century copy. SIZE: 13-1/4” x 10”. AFTER CARLO MARATTA (Italian, 1625-1713) OLD MASTER – IMMACULATE CONCEPTION. Early 19th, possibly 18th Century unsigned oil on canvas copy of the famous work by Carlo Maratta that sits in San Isidoro, Basilica, Rome. The painting depicts the Virgin Mary with baby Jesus. The infant holds a long spear with the tip at a snakes head at her feet. Cherubs and angels surround them in a heavenly type state. Housed in a good gilt fancy wood frame with name tag and dates. DEWITT CLINTON BOUTELLE (American, 1817-1884) VALLEY FARM. Oil on canvas bright late summer scene shows a farmer in his pasture with cows grazing next to pond with ducks. Colorful trees surround the pond and pasture. Farm buildings are seen at the end of the meadow. Several rooftops are seen over the tree level. All under an expansive sunlit sky. ADA CLIFFORD MURPHY (American, 19th/20th Century) “THE OLD GARDEN”. Oil on canvas scene shows a neglected garden of an old gabled cottage, with rows of hollyhocks in full blossom, and a chicken coop at left beneath gnarled apple trees. Signed lower left “A. C. Murphy”. Back of frame has label from the Pennsylvania Academy of Art 59th Annual Exhibition and another label from Anderson Galleries and also an indication that it is from the collection of John Daly, sold at the American Art Association, 1907. HAMILTON HAMILTON (American, 1847-1928) THE BUTTERFLY CATCHER. Fabulous oil on canvas scene shows a young girl with long brown hair wearing a brown/red coat, blue pants and long stockings and shoes. She is kneeling on one knee and her hand is out grasping towards a butterfly that has landed on one of the flowers in a large bouquet of flowers which is held in a large blue urn on cement plinth. Colorful poppies and greenery is seen in the background. Signed lower left “Hamilton Hamilton NA”. Housed in what appears to be its original gilt fancy gesso decorated frame. SIZE: 8” x 20”.
