JOSEPH B. KAHILL (American, 1882-1957) THE LAST STROKE. Outstanding large oil on canvas scene shows an elderly artist who sits in front of a large painting that he apparently has just finished. His head rests against the canvas and his eyes are closed. The large artist’s pallet which holds large dollops of paint and paint brushes has tilted down and paint and a brush has hit the floor. The painting that he was working on is set on a large wood easel and shows a young woman holding a lantern above her. The room is well appointed with sculpture and paintings and a stand is set with a ginger jar holding brushes. Signed lower left “Jos. B. Kahill 1914″. Housed in its original wide gilt molded wood frame with gilt liner. SIZE: 58″ x 42”. PROVENANCE: Descended through artist’s family. CONDITION: There are several small scrapes with small chips but generally in very good condition. One quarter size spot in upper right has been filled and inpainted. UNSIGNED (American, 19th/20th Century) THE BIG BLACK SCHOONER. Unframed, unsigned oil on canvas folk art portrait of a large black hulled four-mast tall ship. Each mast has a different flag including the American flag. The boat is seen at anchor and several people are aboard. A white skiff approaches the boat and a group of people are on a foreground dock. A low land mass is beyond with houses. The scene is similar to a view on the Kennebec River in Bath, Maine. SIZE: 24″ x 36″. CONDITION: Very dirty with discolored varnish, chipping to right side and right bottom, two small tears which are unrestored. She gazes to her right with a pleasant smile and has a golden kerchief in her hair. The background scene shows a large river with tree lined banks and far off cultivated fields. The fruit includes plums, peach, apple, purple and green grapes, along with red raspberries, blackberries and cherries. Atop the fruit are red and blue flowers. There are a variety of insects including fly, mosquito and ladybugs. Still life is set on a marble slab and is unsigned. Housed in a fine reproduction gilt frame retaining a Guido Frame Studio label. ATTRIBUTED TO SEVERIN ROESEN (American, 1815-1872) STILL LIFE OF FRUIT. Outstanding oil on canvas scene shows a grouping of colorful fruit and leaves with red flower. Fruits include plum, cherry, red raspberries, green and purple grapes. A red zinnia type flower is hidden behind green leaves and several insects are seen including beetles, fly, moth and ants. Arrangement is on a marble slab and dew drops glisten on the leaves. Housed in a reproduction gilt frame retaining a Guido Frame Studio label. SIZE: 18″ x 15″. Housed in its original gesso decorated gilt frame with linen and gilt lining. Frame has an original label from the S. Klein Department Store which was located on Union Square in New York City. Label indicates a Prop Dept. number and indicates that it was purchased from the artist Johann Berthelsen for a cost of $250 and this was one of six commissioned. FREDERICK STUART CHURCH (American, 1842-1924) “FLAMINGOES”. Outstanding oil on canvas scene shows a young maiden at the edge of water seated on a grassy bank dipping her toe into the water. She arranges flowers in her hair as two pink flamingos stand beside her in the water. The color of the flamingos and her blue sheer dress reflects in the water while flowers and a green canopy surround the backdrop. Signed lower right “FS Church” with copyright symbol and “N.Y. 1917”. Housed in a fine gesso decorated gilt frame with linen liner. REFERENCE: This painting was illustrated on a full page and numbered “141” in the Winter Exhibition of 1917 catalog at the National Academy of Design. NORMAN ROCKWELL (American, 1894-1978) SKETCH FOR “THE PHARMACIST”. Unsigned sketch is on brown paper which has been glued down to a light board. It shows a pharmacist with pencil behind ear filling a clear bottle with a measuring beaker. Behind him is his University diploma. The “Pharmacist” was the front cover illustration for the Saturday Evening Post March 18th, 1939. SIZE: 17″ x 19-3/4″. CONDITION: Laid down, having what appears to be several tears, one starting at the bottom of the vest and going up through arm. A slice off the top left corner and damage to left corner and upper right corner. Other small tears but generally intact. ATTRIBUTED TO ARTHUR B. SINGER (American, 1917-1990) 32 BIRD ILLUSTRATIONS. 32 unsigned separate watercolor bird illustrations in fine color and detail. Most depict ducks and game birds in their natural habitat. One of the 32 is a watercolor scene of the artist with guide in a canoe in western landscape. Probably illustrations for a book, magazine or stamps. Arthur Singer helped to illustrate over 20 books and worked with several magazines. Known as one of America’s most prolific and best bird and wildlife watercolorist. An extraordinary opportunity to acquire a collection of his work. SIZE: Range from 4″ x 8-1/2″ to 11″ x 9″. ABRAM LOEB (American, First half of the 20th Century) FOUR PIECE MURAL. Abram Loeb headed the art division of Old Mr. Boston Distillery in Boston, Massachusetts. He was responsible for all illustrative works dealing with the company and was under their hire. This mural descended through the owner’s family. The works are unsigned and may or may not have been used in the distilleries promotional campaign. The mural has been divided into four panels and housed in simple stained wood frames. The following oil on canvas laid on fiberboard panels are described left to right in the mural 1)17-1/2″ x 58″ panel shows a large farm with haystacks and man filling a hay wagon. Left side depicting two men, one teaching a sporting dog within a scroll border. 2) 17-1/2″ x 68-1/2″ shows the farm with farmer next to haystacks looking to a stagecoach with people and four horse team. 3) 17-1/2″ x 74-1/4″ shows a group of fox hunters on horses returning to the tavern where they are being presented with mugs of beer. A landscape scene is seen in the background with a large house. 4) 17-1/2″ x 91-1/2″ completes the mural having a fox hunting scene with dogs, horses and men. A landscape with trees and water. Ending in a tavern scene with men at table with steins within a scroll border. These panels would be a wonderful decorative element in any pub, tavern, home or hunting clubs meeting room. WILLIAM MULREADY (Irish, 1786-1863) IRISH FARM LIFE. Fine oil on canvas scene shows a central figure of a boy seated on a stumpy area whittling a stick. He is well clothed with red vest, blue jacket and matching pants and wearing a plaid cap. Over his shoulder is his mother who has a pail and stands next to two large cows. Beyond is the connected log cabin looking out over a valley with river and green valley floor. Above the low hills is a sunset sky with puffy white clouds. Signed lower right lightly “W Mulready”. SIR EDWARD BURNE-JONES (British, 1833-1898) THE DISCERNING EYE. Outstanding watercolor interior scene shows a woman seated in a Savaronola chair. She wears a brown dress and her feet are propped up on a rose colored pillow. She has selected a floral print material from a box to her left which has other pieces. The room is well appointed with a gilt decorated fancy cassone and claw foot two-tier table supported by full putti figures. Enamel decorated glassware, urn and bronze plaque have been placed on the furniture. Fine architectural columned walls and marble floor complete the scene. Signed lower left “E. Burne-Jones 1881”. The following words are found on the lithograph: “La Revue Blanche Bi-Mensuelle Leno 60 Cent. 12 Francs Par An 1 rue Laffitte Paris Charpentier et Fasquelle, Editeurs 11, rue de Grenelle”. Also on edge of bottom right “Imp. Edw. Ancourt. Paris”. Bottom left is circle monogram with “95” in green. Housed in a modern gilt wood frame with linen liner. The lithograph can be seen in its entirety and is mounted on a linen backing. Back of foam core backing has a label from the Obelisk Gallery, Boston, Massachusetts with title and artist. Also an Alon Gallery, Brookline, Massachusetts label. A copy of the original receipt from Obelisk Gallery dated May 4th, 1968. SIZE: 49-1/2″ h x 36″ w. CONDITION: Under close examination there appears to be several areas along the left border outside of the image that appears to have been restored cracks/tears and the left margin edge has paper restoration.
