RARE ENGRAVED REMINGTON MODEL 1888 SINGLE ACTION ARMY REVOLVER.
SN 485. Cal 44 WCF (44-40). Usual configuration with 5-3/4″ bbl, altered nickel silver front sight with 1 line “E. REMINGTON & SONS, ILION. N.Y. U.S.A.” that reads from muzzle to frame. Mounted with 2-pc replacement Remington logo embossed hard rubber grips. Front of the frame and bottom of bbl under ejector rod housing and inside ejector rod housing are stamped with the assembly number “115”. Revolver has nearly full coverage Nimschke-style engraving which consists of flowing foliate arabesque patterns with fine pearled background. Recoil shield & loading gate are engraved with Mr. Nimschke’s trademark sunburst patterns. Cylinder has matching foliate arabesque patterns on lands between the flutes with a fine zig-zag pattern around the rear edge. Matching engraving extends over the top strap & both sides of the bbl with geometric patterns around the address. Buttstrap has a plugged lanyard hole. Revolver has the overall appearance of having been close to a fire with fine pitting over most surfaces from smoke damage. There were less than 1,000 of these revolvers produced 1888-1889. They were the improvement on the Model 1875 with the reduced ejector housing web and shorter bbls. This model was unknown until an Hartley & Graham catalog of about 1888 was recently discovered which pictured the Model 1888 alongside the Model 1875. CONDITION: Very good to fine, all matching except grips which are replacements. Metal retains a cleaned gray metal patina with the aforementioned fine pitting. Replacement grips are fine with a purple tone. Timing needs adjusting otherwise mechanics are fine. Strong bore with scattered pitting. 52310-2 (6,000-8,000) – Lot 3159

FACTORY ENGRAVED REMINGTON-RIDER MAGAZINE PISTOL
NSN. Cal. 32 RF Extra-Short. 3″ oct. bbl. Full magazine. Full nickel finish. Smooth 2-pc rosewood grips. Bbl shows 2-line Remington address and patent mark on top flat. Bbl and magazine are not engraved. Receiver shows relatively sparse engraving on both sides with a vine scroll motif and a punch dot scallop border. There is a starburst on top of frame in front of hammer. Pistol is otherwise unmarked. PROVENANCE: Bruce Burtner Collection. CONDITION: Fine. Bbl retains 90% nickel finish that has somewhat dulled with age with some flaking on the left side. Bore is frosty with strong rifling. Cartridge carrier device retains a generous amount of case color. Hammer retains a generous amount of blue. Nickel trigger is slightly flaked on the sides and shows some light cleaning marks. Rosewood grips are very good with some light battering on the right grip. A nice example of a Remington Rider Magazine Pistol with relatively sparse engraving. One of less than 15,000 made. SN 280. Cal. .41 RF. 3″ bbls, full nickel finish, 2-pc Mother-of-Pearl grips, top of bbl shows Remington-U.M.C. address, SN appears on the left inside of the grip frame and on the bottom of bbl lug. PROVENANCE: Bruce Burtner Collection. CONDITION: Very good. Bbls retain 80-90% thinning nickel with some flaking at the muzzle and a few mars and scratches overall. Bbl address is sharp. Bores are dark with visible rifling. Hammer, ejector, lever latch, and trigger all retain generous traces of blue finish blending with a smooth silver/gray patina. Frame also retains 90%+ nickel finish with some flaking on the forestrap and minor scratches and handling marks overall. Pearl grips are intact with no missing pieces or cracks. OUTSTANDING RARE REMINGTON LARGE DOG’S HEAD CANE GUN.
NSN. Cal. 32 RF. All dark brown gutta percha (hard rubber) construction over a steel liner, 35″ overall, 29″ bbl and the large molded dog’s head motif as grip. Remington cane guns were made between 1866-1888 in very few survive today completely intact. This lot is being offered without reserve. CONDITION: Fine overall. SCARCE REMINGTON PERCUSSION CANE GUN WITH CURVED WOODEN HANDLE.
SN 12. Cal. 31 Perc. Scarce Remington percussion cane gun, 35″ overall with short handle shaft, a German silver band at the transition from handle to shaft with a checkered domed trigger button. The tip is of iron with patent and address markings along with the SN. There is a sight band about 1/2″ above the tip which is missing its bead. Handle is a wooden replacement that is a neat reproduction of an orig curved handle. The entire shaft is of gutta percha that has turned dark chocolate brown. There is a longitudinal hairline crack that runs from the trigger button opening to the joint and another repaired crack near the tip that is nearly unnoticeable. According to Flayderman’s Guide to Antique American Firearms there were about 500 of these rare canes produced 1858-1866. PROVENANCE: Outstanding estate collection of Confederate and historical arms of Morris Racker. CONDITION: Very good. Shaft and handle shaft with cracks as noted, otherwise, the gutta percha is sound and clean with a wonderful dark chocolate patina. ENGRAVED REMINGTON NEW MODEL ARMY MARTIAL REVOLVER.
SN 116547. Cal. 44. 8″ bbl. Blue finish with brass trigger guard and 2-pc walnut grips. Revolver is expertly engraved, during period of use, in scrollwork and embellishments on frame, bbl, loading lever, trigger guard, backstrap, and cyl. Bbl shows correct 3-line address, patent mark, and model designation. Bottom flat of bbl shows SN. SN also appears on left side of grip straps under grip. There is a “J” inspector mark on trigger guard behind screw. Other inspector marks have been engraved over. Cyl shows an “A” inspector mark on rear periphery between bolt stops and a “K” on rear face between 2 nipples. Grips are not numbered, but show a faint trace of inspector cartouche on left side. CONDITION: Fine. Bbl is an even plumb-brown patina overall with traces of blue in protected areas. Bbl address is sharp. Engraving is sharp. SN is sharp. Bore is bright with strong rifling. Frame is a plumb-brown patina overall with traces of blue. Trigger guard is a mustard-yellow patina. Grip straps are also a gray-brown patina. Cyl shows 50% orig blue finish with a sharp inspector mark. Engraving is also sharp. Grips are very good, have been cleaned, and are slightly under-sized. SN 19067. Cal. 44. 8″ bbl. Two line patent date/address barrel marking without “NEW MODEL”. “PATENTED SEPT. 14, 1858/E. REMINGTON & SONS, ILION, NEW YORK, U.S.A.”, on top. The front sight is the early production cone sight of the 1861 model. Proper SN range. Inspectors marks on left side of bbl, frame, cyl. Proper cartouche on left grip. All external numbers matching. PROVENANCE: The collection of Robert Roughton. CONDITION: Fine condition, with a majority of orig blue on bbl and lever. Fair amount of orig blue on cyl. Good case color on sides of hammer. A clear preservative coating has been applied to areas with finish. Frame is mostly a pleasing gun metal color, with minute traces of orig blue. All markings clear. Edges of gun are sharp. Grips are very good, showing wear, good cartouche. Bore is bright with sharp rifling, some very minor pitting. RARE CIVIL WAR MARTIALLY MARKED EARLY REMINGTON “NEW MODEL” ARMY PERCUSSION REVOLVER WITH VARIANT BARREL ADDRESS.
SN 23281. Cal. 44. Standard configuration with 8″ oct bbl, 2-line address with the addition of “NEW MODEL” stamped separately off to the right instead of the normally seen 3-line markings. We have not noticed this variant before. This gun has discernible inspector’s cartouche on left grip and sub-inspector letters found on most metal parts. Note early full German silver cone front sight. PROVENANCE: The collection of Robert Roughton. CONDITION: Very good overall, all matching SNs found on bbl, cylinder, frame and penciled inside each grip. Bbl and frame retain about half their orig blue finish with balance plum/grey, with numerous small scratches, nicks and pinprick pitting. Cylinder is overall plum/grey. SN 71619. Cal. 44. This was the second largest production of Army revolvers during the Civil War. Standard configuration with 8″ bbl stamped on top bbl flat “PATENTED SEPT. 14 1858 / E REMINGTON & SONS. ILION. NEW YORK. U.S.A. / NEW-MODEL”. These guns generally saw hard use and nice “as found” examples are scarce such as this. “NJ” surcharge is found on left bbl flat and frame. PROVENANCE: The collection of Robert Roughton. CONDITION: Fine overall. Matching SN found on bbl, frame and grips, cylinder not numbered though color matches overall condition of gun. Metal overall is grungy plum/blue with about 80% bright orig finish found on bbl and cylinder. Grips are well fit with no discernible cartouche and old varnish, chipped at both inside toes. “LEYS” scratched on buttstrap. Good case colors on either side of hammer. Markings are clear. Grips are very good with light handling marks, clear cartouche. Bore is bright with sharp rifling. Nipples are sharp. RARE MARTIALLY MARKED REMINGTON MODEL 1861 “OLD ARMY” PERCUSSION REVOLVER.
SN 5743. Cal. 44. Standard configuration with 8″ oct bbl, 2-line address “PATENT DEC 17 1861 / MANUFACTURED BY REMINGTONS’ ILION. N.Y.”. Only about 6,000 of this model was made 1861-1862 and almost all made for Army contracts. This gun has weak but discernible inspector’s cartouche on left grip and sub-inspector letters found on most metal parts. Inside one grip is written in pencil “J.F. WOLESLAGLE”. A quick internet search found a John Woleslagle from Clearfield County, PA who served from 1862-1864 in the 149th Regiment. PROVENANCE: The collection of Robert Roughton. CONDITION: Good overall, all matching SNs found on bbl, cylinder and frame. Metal is overall a mottled old cleaned grey with staining and pitting. SN 9165. Cal. 44. Standard configuration with 8″ oct bbl, 2-line address “PATENT DEC 17 1861 / MANUFACTURED BY REMINGTONS’ ILION. N.Y.”. Only about 6,000 of this model were made 1862 all for government contract. This gun has weak but discernible inspector’s cartouche on left grip and sub-inspector letters found on most metal parts. Internally, one grip has initials “RWB”, possibly of soldier and externally on left grip “RB”. This gun saw honest use but is still functional, well marked with light muzzle wear. PROVENANCE: The collection of Robert Roughton. CONDITION: Good to very good overall, all matching, SNs found on bbl, cylinder, frame and penciled inside each grip. Gun has an overall dark grey/plum patina with traces of finish especially in protected areas. Well fit grips with moderate edge wear and chipped toes. SN 1879. Cal. 44. Standard configuration with 8″ oct bbl with partially discernible 2-line address “PATENT DEC 17 1861 / MANUFACTURED BY REMINGTONS’ ILION. N.Y.”. Only about 6,000 of this model were made under government contract in 1862. This gun has no discernible inspector’s cartouche but sub-inspector’s initials are found on many parts. PROVENANCE: The collection of Robert Roughton. CONDITION: Fair to good overall. Matching SN found on bbl and frame. Cylinder has obliterated SN, but same inspection letter “A” as bbl and frame. Gun has been heavily cleaned and buffed. Overall grey patina with pitting. Top of bbl shows file marks and partial bbl address. Left grip has about 1/3 portion at rear restored.
