EXTRAORDINARY 19TH C BEESWAX BLACK FOLK ART DIORAMA. This incredible deep diorama was constructed in one point in time of beeswax which has been painted. It depicts an animated scene titled “Charcoal Club of Blackville in Session”. The diorama was done by F. Lobel sometime around 1894. Six black figures in various poses stand and are seated along a table. A humorous map hangs on the wall directly in back. An absolutely phenomenal piece of black folk art. SIZE: Approx. 21 1/2″ w x 14 1/2″ t. CONDITION: Generally good. It appears that there may have been some small object on the table that is no longer there but is in generally good condition. The simple border or frame may have been cardboard at one time has now been reinforced in the back with thin strips of pine. FABULOUS OLD LITHOGRAPH DIORAMA AND AUTOMATON OF ANIMATED BLACK BARN DANCE. This fabulous late 19th early 20th Century diorama, was distributed by the Parisian Importing Co. Features lithographed animated black figures doing a barn dance. Women and men dance in the doorway, musicians on either side play their instruments, a mammy in the foreground with a child sings and a horse in the stables moves with the music. Titled within the lithography in the barn rafters “Great Racket”. There is some great old lithography here. SIZE: Approx. 32 1/2″ w x 24″ h incl. frame. CONDITION: Lithograph figures appear to be in generally good condition. The mammy with the baby has a crease which may have been a split at one time and there is a separation along the scene of the lithography in the barn.. GREAT OLD NEW BEDFORD SODA WATER COOLER. This great old painted galvanized cooler is really neat. It is a great advertisement for Wheaton’s Soda Water and could appeal to the marine collectors. Is from one of the sea faring capitols of North America: Bedford, MA. In addition it has a wonderful whale spouting on each side. The advertising panels are gold in the background with a black whale having orange letters and green water. “Wheaton’s Famous Soda Water, It is a Whale of a Drink”. The white cooler has a similar advertising panel on both sides. SIZE: Approx. 18″ l x 14″ w x 17″ h. CONDITION: The cooler in generally good to excellent condition. The advertising panels vary. This large book is filled with wonderful old colored lithography of men in various Scotch woolen suits. On the opposite page of the lithographed image are various swatches of wool in different textures and patterns. There are some great images in here and would be wonderful framed items. One plate depicts the Scotch major League Baseball uniforms with the Scotch baseball team posing. Another depicts a group of young men holding baseball bats, gloves, etc. promoting the boys Knickerbockers suit. Another depicts two dapper gentlemen in suits playing golf. LATE 19TH EARLY 20TH C FABULOUS LITHO BLACK DIORAMA AUTOMATON. This incredible 19th Century black automaton depicts a group of animated black uniformed soldiers being drilled by a black leader on horseback. The mechanism was electrified and had a small motor that when plugged in would create a considerable amount of motion. The drummer in the foreground would beat his drum marked “Skidmore Guard”. The officer on horseback would wave his sword and the marching soldiers would move. Lithographed in the background are numerous black folk watching with hens and dogs running along side. The diorama is in a deep shadow box with an elaborate gessoed molded frame. SIZE: Entire frame is approx. 39″ x 30 1/2″. CONDITION: The electric motor currently does not have a plug in device so we do not know if it works. This probably had a key wind motor originally. As in original toy, side of cabin shows the same striking highly graphic images of Black Mammy and child. LARGE BUGLER FIGURE AUTOMATON. This fantastic Shakespearean-looking automaton may have been used in a large department store such as Macy’s or FAO Schwartz at one time. This gentleman with bugle is mounted on a large wooden box. He is electrified and is really unusual. The bugler’s belly and back open, possibly to hold a clock, like his counterpart. Composition head. When plugged in his motor makes a noise but he doesn’t seem to respond. He probably needs to have some work done. SIZE: Approx. 6’8″ t. CONDITION: Mannequin seems to be in generally good condition. Uniform is still intact and in basically good condition but soiled. One can see some parts inside but it is difficult to determine whether it just needs some adjustments or a major overhaul. RARE PORCELAIN KOCHS SALESMAN SAMPLE BARBER CHAIR. This leather, nickel and porcelain salesman sample for a Theo A. Koch’s barber chair is one of the most desirable of all salesman samples. These samples were made in wonderful detail and includes ornate nickeled footrest with raised relief filigree and marked “Theo A Kochs Company Chicago. The mechanism is set up with a hydraulic pump in the pedestal as the full-sized one would be. When filled with oil, it can be operated with the handle on the side. It features an adjustable spring loaded headrest. SIZE: 16 1/4″h to top of headrest and 9″w at widest point. CONDITION: The leather upholstery appears to be all original and in place except for on the headrest. The porcelain is in near excellent condition with three small repaired chips on the base. RARE PLANTER’S PEANUT FIGURAL SCALE. This fantastic Mr. Peanut’s scale has always been a very desirable collectable. So much so that between 30 and 40 years ago, an entrepreneur made a limited number of copies. This is one of those rare copies that were produced sometime around the 1960’s early 70’s. In doing so, he made exact duplicates of the Mr. Peanut figure and mounted them on old Hamilton scale mechanisms. The tremendous cost to do this resulted in only a few of these being produced. This is an exact copy and it is extremely difficult to determine the difference between the reproduction and the original $20,000 earlier versions. SIZE: 44″ tall. The trophy-cup shaped decorated body is constructed from galvanized sheet metal with the handles, top and base fabricated from cast aluminum. Cast metal handles mounted on either side. The crank on the left side, mechanism plays ten tunes and is complete with a play card. Popular tunes include one of the most famous W.W.I. tunes produced “Over There” by James M. Cohen. The mechanism is driven by a large spring and features a bell attachment.
