ASTONISHINGLY RARE AND HISTORICALLY IMPORTANT ORIGINAL STEIFF ROD BEAR WITH ELEPHANT BUTTON.

Where it all began-almost. The oldest Steiff teddy bear design as we know it in existence today. This utterly remarkable blond mohair bear is rod jointed, the second type of jointing Steiff experimented with at the very early turn of the last century. Bears with rod jointing were only produced for a small number of years and very few remain today. This bear is made from blond mohair, is 5-ways jointed, and has felt paw pads. He originally would have had five black claw stitches on each paw; he is missing a few stitches on his left hand paw. Teddy’s body is very solidly stuffed. His early and lovely face is detailed with black shoebutton eyes, a shaved muzzle, a black hand-formed gutta percha nose, and a light brown mouth. And the pièce de résistance, teddy has his original elephant button in his ear, perhaps the most desirable Steiff ID in the world. SIZE: Overall 15″ t (38cm). Sitting 10-1/2″ t (26cm). PROVENANCE: Chuck & Cathy Steffes Collection. CONDITION: Paw pad repairs on hands, a few small holes and divots in foot pads. You can see the red underlying felt lining on the right foot paw pad. General light playwear. For a bear of this age and importance, it doesn’t get much better than this. 1-13811 (15,000-22,000) – Lot 3008

STUNNING & EXTREMELY DESIRABLE STEIFF YELLOW TEDDY BEAR FROM 1925 WITH BUTTON.

This amazing and truly beautiful teddy bear design was produced because Richard Steiff, in a letter from America, insisted that Steiff bears, which had not changed significantly in design since their introduction at the turn of the last century, become more soft, colorful and warm, reflecting the culture of the time. This charming bear is made from very long, soft and curly slightly faded yellow mohair and is jointed 5-ways. Teddy has tan felt paw pads with four hand-embroidered claws on each. The distinctly youthful and feminine face is detailed with oversized brown and black glass pupil eyes, hand-embroidered nose and mouth, and a slightly shorter mohair muzzle. She retains her long trailing “F” Steiff button. This bear was also produced in pink mohair; overall from 1925-1930, 5271 yellow and 4794 pink examples were produced. SIZE: Overall 20″ t (50cm). Sitting 12-1/2″ t (30cm). PROVENANCE: Chuck & Cathy Steffes Collection. CONDITION: Tiny hole in right paw pad, very minor thinning. Otherwise very good to excellent. 1-13766 (12,000-18,000) – Lot 3009

GEORGE BROWN CLOCKWORK LARNARD FIRE TOY.

A totally odd form for a clockwork toy from the mid-19th century. A very early style of a fire pumper with its three original dimensional lead firemen. One with a fire horn and the others operating the equipment. Not only is the form highly unusual, but some of the coloring employed is rarely found on any other American tin toys. The flesh tone/peach coloring to the basic framework is rather odd and the stenciling used to decorate it is not found on any other American tin toy. To be quite frank, every aspect of this toy is most unique. The clockwork mechanism propels the toy along the floor and through a wire soldered to the rear axle, a bell is struck. A front fork extends the front wheels forward of the entire unit can steer it left or right. Simply put, this toy is an enigma, not only in style but also design, color and any other aspect imaginable. A rare opportunity to own a toy of this nature that for the most part is in virtually very fine all original condition. SIZE: 11″ l x 7-1/2″ h. CONDITION: As described above, upon close examination, the only issue that could be found with this toy is there appears to be the slightest amount of paint enhancement to the left rear wheel covering. Perhaps the solder had broken loose and in need of a minor repair. 1-14198 (6,000-12,000) – Lot 3245

FALLOWS/GEORGE BROWN CIRCUS CAGE DRAWN BY PLATFORM ELEPHANTS.

An unusually large early American tin toy possibly by either Fallows or George Brown. The thought of combining a fabulous platform toy with a trainer along with mom and baby pachyderms to draw this over sized cage wagon boggles the imagination. Ingenuity transformed from reality to toy form! The cage wagon is truly oversized compared to any other circus cage wagon that is known to exist. It is almost absurd to think of placing a lion and a leopard in a cage together. The coloring on the cage is very unusual and a strange combination of colors yet visually attractive. Quite an impressive toy with an abundance of charm as well as presence. SIZE: 20-1/2″ l x 6-1/2″ w x 8-3/4″ h. CONDITION: Overall very good plus original condition. The cage itself appears to be in untouched condition, the platform toy has some paint/solder work at large elephants feet and yoke wires. 1-14199 (5,500-6,500) – Lot 3248

$3,258.75

EARLY AMERICAN TIN MERRY GO ROUND TOY.

A most unique form depicting a gentleman on a three wheeled base with a circular merry go round with three animals and a child behind him. When the toy is pushed along the floor, the platform would spin in a counter clockwise motion. Two goats and a dog with a basket along with a youth are on the platform. Toy itself and its form appear to be an original entity but there has been significant overall restoration to this toy. Still with this in mind, it is quite appealing and noteworthy. Perhaps the original maker was George Brown but no definitive attribution can be made. SIZE: 8-1/2″ l x 8-1/2″ h. CONDITION: As stated above. 1-13890 (1,500-2,500) – Lot 3257

EARLY 20″ LIVE STEAM MARKLIN PLEASURE/RIVERBOAT.

Typical of the Marklin firm they made a variety of toys from the later part of the 18th century through the mid 20th century that by today’s standards were excellent quality, intrinsically pleasing and highly sought after by collectors today. This particular example circa 1910 is of a pleasure boat the “Priscilla” that would have traveled in real life, the lakes and rivers of the world. The Marklin firm utilized 3 methods of propulsion, a clock work mechanism, an electric motor powered by battery and in this case a live steam motor. Oftentimes because of the live steam method and being in water the boat after 100+ years would be in poor finish and thus as in this case needing restoration. This particular boat has been fully restored to its original glory and quite possibly their might be a few replacement parts such as the masts and or lifeboats? Expert restoration including some wear and grazing to the paint give the impression that the boat actually is in remarkable original finish. Back in the day this was quite an expensive toy and it is hard to believe that this was actually a play toy for a male youth. Typical of Marklin so much attention paid to the details, including the striped deck, funnels, lifeboats, etc. A wonderful item for a collector and at only a fraction of the price of one in pristine original finish! SIZE: 20″ long. CONDITION: Expert older restoration. Boat including steam plant appear to be intact and complete, lacking only the rear flat on stern of boat. 1-13651 (12,500-17,500) – Lot 3262

$14,220.00

SCHONNER “AVISO GREIF” LIVE STEAM GUN BOAT.

Believed to be the largest version of this particular early 20th century boat that Schonner produced (37-1/2″ l). Not as complicated and detailed as Marklin boats, but somehow in its simplicity, it is quite appealing and intrinsically pleasing. A bevy of smokestacks, funnels, lifeboats, and mounted guns further add to the appeal of this wonderful toy. Live steam motor is contained within the hull of the boat under the cabin area and powers the twin screw propellers. Professionally restored a number of years ago and aging has set in to give it an original appearance.Schonner tended to use some lifelike features including cast davits to lower the lifeboats, and a pair of smaller signal masts (red/green) along with a fancifully cast yardarm on the bow of the boat. Boat is supported by a wheeled framework for display or perhaps to pull it along the floor (of more recent vintage). SIZE: 37-1/2″ l. CONDITION: Overall some uniform chipping and paint flaking, most notably to the right underside of hull. 1-13650 (13,000-15,000) – Lot 3263

1920s BING TOURING CAR.

In what appears to be in phenomenal original condition, this large clockwork touring car is quite the toy! Steerable front end with an adjustable windshield, a chauffeured driver, nickel disc wheels with rubber tires, and nickel plated accessories such as radiator, front bumper, klaxon horn, headlights and cowl lamps adorn this vehicle. Opening rear doors to the rear passenger compartment as well as brake and directional levers adjacent to driver’s door. Predominantly enameled in dark green with yellow pinstripes, car has the Bing emblem rubber stamped on left cowl. Radiator is also embossed “Bing” as well. Further details are the striped running boards with a small opening tool chest on one side and an accessory box on the other. A steel wire is attached to the front axle and front bumper indicating that perhaps something is loose or disconnected–it appears two small tabs under the radiator that hold this assembly in place. SIZE: 16-1/2″ l. CONDITION: As stated above. 1-14196 (4,000-6,000) – Lot 3266

ORGAN GRINDER AND PERFORMING BEAR MECHANICAL BANK.

A very fine example of a classical mechanical bank with a clockwork mechanism. Mechanism can be activated by either a lever on the base or depositing a coin in the organ grinder. When activated the bear proceeds to spin about while the organ grinder cranks the hurdy gurdy device. A youth and a police officer looking over the rear fence enjoying the folly of the action. Overall paint is vibrant with an abundance of yellow and red highlighting to the green base. The house itself has wonderful copper highlighting to the windows and the red roof has excellent paint. The back fence with the police officer and youth is intact and also has a very fine paint finish. A really nice all original and complete example with no damage to the iron castings and in fine working order. SIZE: 7″ w x 4-3/4″ d. CONDITION: As stated above, very good to fine condition. The one minor issue being some oxidation/dark spots on flat green base where bear and organ grinder stand. The bear himself has fabulous copper highlighting and his bar is intact with no broken end pieces. A light cleaning would certainly enhance the overall appeal of this bank! 1-14111 (3,500-5,500) – Lot 3306

“NONE SUCH” MINCEMEAT LANTERN.

Scarce, early 4-sided lantern with Halloween and patriotic themed polychrome reverse printed glass panels. The painted green tin lid is punched out with a moon and stars pattern and has a ring for hanging. An interior tin turbine mechanism is driven by the heat of a candle or lamp oil which would illuminate the side graphics and turn to produce rotating patterns on the ceiling through the top cut-outs. Side panels are captioned “None Such Condensed Soup”, “Our flag is First-Our Goods the Best”, “None Such New England Mincemeat Like Mother Used to Make”, and “None Such Prepared Pumpkin Condensed in Two Pie Packages”. The “None Such” brand was developed by Lewis Merrell and Oscar Soule who formed the “Merrell-Soule Company” in Syracuse, NY for the purpose of canning vegetables. They introduced the “None Such” mincemeat brand just before 1900 which also helps date this lantern that is stamped on the bottom “Pat. August 31, 1897”. SIZE: 7″ l x 7″ w x 17″ h. CONDITION: Very good to excellent with some light paint loss to tin red body and green top, but one of the nicest examples cataloger has seen. 1-14201 (5,500-6,500) – Lot 3575
