James D. Julia’s November 2015 Lamps, Glass, and Jewelry Auction A Shining Success At Over $2.4 Million!

This remarkable auction event featured the finest selections of antique and modern rarities from several important private collections and included world-class examples from Tiffany, Handel, Argy Rousseau, Galle, Steuben, and Le Verre Francais, among many others.

Fairfield, Maine, November 30, 2015 – Julia’s recent lamps, glass, and jewelry auction was a thing of beauty – literally! This phenomenally successful event featured over 650 of the most interesting and collectible glass related treasures – including lighting, decorative and functional items, and accessories – in recent memory. And collectors seemed to agree, with 43 lots realizing $10,000 or above, 13 lots realizing $25,000 or more, and 6 lots casting a glow at $50,000 or more!

Tiffany Studios leaded glass lamps were the spotlights of this auction. Four exceptional examples claimed top spots in this sale’s overall results. It’s no fish tale to say that a Koi Table Lamp with full provenance, estimated at $50,000-100,000, was the catch of the day at $106,650. A Poppy Table Lamp came in just a shade below its estimate of $70,000-90,000 to realize $65,175. An Apple Blossom Dash Numbered shade nearly tripled its low estimate of $20,000 to realize $59,250, while a Dogwood Table fixture, estimated at $50,000-70,000, lit the lamp at $53,325.

Other lamp highlights include a Pairpoint Puffy Apple Tree table lamp, estimated at $25,000-35,000, that came to fruition at $29,625 and a Moorish Leaded Glass Chandelier, estimated at $10,000-15,000, which hung in there to realize $16,590.

This auction featured exceptional examples of Galle marquetry glass. A highlight from this category – and perhaps the entire auction as a whole – was an iris and flames Galle marquetry vase in its original presentation box, estimated at $15,000-25,000. When the smoke cleared, this lot – described by our cataloger as “The highest quality Galle marquetry piece we have ever had the privilege of offering,” – realized $53,325. Collectors were also all aflutter over a 13-3/4” Galle marquetry butterfly vase, which was estimated at $10,000-20,000 and realized $32,588. A Galle marquetry wheel carved vase, estimated at $7,000-9,000 spun to $20,738. And a Galle marquetry sugar bowl, estimated at $5,000-7,000, realized a sweet $21,330.

Tiffany art glass was a real eye catcher in this sale. A Tiffany Flower Form Vase, estimated at $4,000-6,000, put the petal to the metal to realize $26,070. An extraordinarily rare Tiffany Cypriot vase nearly tripled its high estimate to realize $17,775. A Tiffany Decorated Gourd Vase with an iridescent pulled feather design, estimated at $1,000-1,500, took flight to realize $11,850. And a most unusual collection Tiffany Favrile Glass Salesman’s Samples, estimated at $800-1,200 closed the deal at $17,775.

Loetz vases and light fixtures were well represented in this auction, with almost 50 fine examples on offer. A chalice shaped Phaenomen Vase, attributed to Franz Hofstoetter and estimated at $3,000,-5,000, realized a phenomenal $29,625. A blue and purple highlighted Loetz Phaenomen decorated vase, estimated at $7,000-10,000, colored one collector’s world at $18,960. And a collection of four smaller Loetz Phaenomen vases, estimated at $1,000-1,500, soared to score at $14,813.

Other manufacturers had a strong showing at this sales event. A Muller Owl Fluogravure Ewer, estimated at $10,000-15,000, was pitcher-perfect to realize $14,813. A G. Argy Rousseau “Peach Blossom” vase, estimated at $2,000-3,000 bloomed at $10,665. And a monumental Le Verre Chat pattern vase, estimated at $4,000-6,000, hit the big time at $10,665.

Bidders also took a shine to this auction’s excellent selections of silver and jewelry. Positively sterling highlights included a phenomenal 418-piece Tiffany and Co. Olympian pattern flatware service, which was estimated at $20,000-25,000 and realized $42,623 and an elegant Georg Jensen sterling silver service for 12 in the Bernadotte pattern, which was estimated at $2,000-4,000 and realized $14,220. And a 18K Jadeite Jade and Diamond pendant, estimated at $10,000-15,000, was a crown jewel, realizing $11,850.

According to Mike Fredericks, James D. Julia’s Lamps, Glass, and Fine Jewelry Department Head, “I am thrilled with the results of this outstanding sale.
