MAGNIFICENT BRONZE FIGURE OF GUANYIN ON LOTUS STAND.

Ming Dynasty period, China. The bronze cast Guanyin is cast seated in dhyanasana on a detachable lotus base with hands in abhaya mudra. Shown wearing long and loose robe, her chest is bejewelled with elaborate beaded necklace. Her face is shown with a benevolent expression, flanked by pendulous earlobes with earrings and wearing a high tiara enclosing a small figure of Buddha. The separate bronze pedestal stand is cast with rows of lotus petals raised on column rises from an hexagonal base. China. The furniture set includes four long seats, two chairs, two stands, and one table. The single piece wood table surface inset with mother-of-pearls, depicting butterflies and swallows flying near a large tree next to blossoming flowers, within a rectangular pattern, the apron pierce carved in ruyi cloud, bats, and coin shapes, another supporting board below, attached to four feet, with additional carved aprons at the corners, all stands on tapered in beast legs. ATTRIBUTED TO ZHANG DAQIAN (Chinese, 1899-1983) CONTEMPLATING UPON SUMMER MOUNTAINS.

Contemplating upon Summer Mountains Ink and colors on paper, mounted on board, dated gengshen, sixty-ninth year (of the Republic of China, 1980) Inscribed and signed, with two seals of the artist “Zhang Yuan,” “Daqian” Inscription reads,“the sixty-ninth year, gengshen, midsummer, Moye Jingshe, eighty-two year Old Man Yuan.” Housed in a modern gilt wood frame with linen matte and inner gold liner. “Contemplating upon Summer Mountains” was done in the summer of 1980, the sixty-ninth year of the Republic of China. It represented Zhang Daqian’s mature style of splashed-ink-and-color technique. In Zhang’s later years, due to his ailing eyesight and the limitations it imposed, the artist developed an abstract style reminiscent of the blue and green landscape of the Tang dynasty (618-906). However, Zhang did not totally abandon the gongbi (fine pen) style that dominated his early years. Rather, as this work demonstrated, a lucid structure still can be seen in the swirls of colors and pools of suffused textured ink, interspersed with fine details of pines, rocks, cottages, and sailboats. The velvety blue in the center and the turquoise green in the back almost had a tactile feel to it. The bold application of blue elucidating the basic pictorial form of the foreground mountain was on the same abstract level as an earlier work, “Approach of a Mountain Storm” from 1967, now in the collection of Chang Sing S. and Kuala Lumpur. Moye Jingshe, mentioned in the inscription, was Zhang Daqian’s residence in Taiwan from 1978 until his death in 1983. Zhang moved from California back to Taiwan in 1976. And in 1977, he bought some lands in Waishuangxi, close to the National Palace Museum. The residence was named Moye Jingshe (translated as “Abode of Illusion”). Moye is the Buddhist word for illusion and Jingshe a meditation hut. The painting could be a view the artist saw or imaged from his studio on a midsummer day. It also reminded us of Zhang’s final large work, “Panorama of Mount Lu,” painted between July 1981 to February 1983, now in the Collection of the Dafeng Tang, Taipei. Zhang never visited nor saw Mount Lu and thus the subject matter imbued him with maximum freedom and imagination. Even though the Zhang Daqian did not start working on the long scroll of Mount Lu (commissioned by Li Haitian) until late 1981, the preparation work actually started in 1980. It is possible that “Contemplating upon Summer Mountains” was one of the many variations of smaller sketches Zhang did before taking on the larger challenge. SIZE: 20-1/2″ x 39-1/2″. OUTSTANDING ORIENTAL CARVED HARDWOOD DISPLAY CABINET WITH ELABORATE CARVED IVORY MOUNTS.

Second half 19th century. The rectangular case with deeply carved arch crest depicting opposing fighting dragons within cloud bands above the rectangular case, densely carved overall. With prunus, conifers, cranes, songbirds, and multiple dragons. The cabinet fitted with an arrangement of doors, drawers, and open shelves centering an arched footbridge. Valance and side panels with foliate pierce carved panels. The door panels, drawer fronts, and medial back panels each fitted with a gold lacquer plaque inlaid with ornately carved ivory chrysanthemums, peonies, iris, and other floral sprigs and sprays, in deep relief and of excellent quality. FINE 15TH CENTURY KATANA “RAI KUNITOSHI YAMASHIRO” IN SHIRASHAYA.

This fine Japanese sword in polish exhibits cutting edge 25-1/2″ long with total blade including tang of 32″. Tang has ancient black color and heavily pitted, though three character signature is discernible and translates “RAI KUNITOSHI YAMASHIRO”. This sword maker rates “SAIJA SAKU” according Hawley (very good). Kunitoshi worked in the first quarter of the 15th century circa 1410. CONDITION: Blade has been polished many times showing numerous separations (kizus) though only a few are present in temper which is easily discerned over most of length of blade to tip. 48546-2 (3,000-5,000) – Lot 4344

JAPANESE KATANA SIGNED “KANE HIRA” IN FINE LACQUER SCABBARD.

This ancient Japanese sword is in polish with cutting edge measuring 29-1/2″ with blade and tang overall about 39″. Two character signature translates “KANE HIRA” who is from Beizen Provence, though this signature is most likely “Gemei” (fake signature). It was common in ancient Japan for a secondary maker to sign the name of the master as a business maneuver such that his swords may sell better. This sword is still quite ancient though probably not dating from the 12th century as Kane Hira. Sword handle is mounted with umbrella and fan minuke and a fine pierced iron fighting suba with gold decoration. Blade is in polish showing temper but with numerous kizus throughout length. Sword presents beautifully in its black/silver lacquer scabbard. CONDITION: Very good to fine as described in description with several large chips of lacquer near throat.
