*RARE BLACK FINISH HOLLAND & HOLLAND 500/ 465 NITRO “INDIA ROYAL” HAMMERLESS EJECTOR DANGEROUS GAME DOUBLE RIFLE WITH CASE, SCOPE, AND ACCESSORIES.

SN 28266. (ca 1910) Cal. 500/ 465 NE. 26″ Chopper lump bbls are fitted with typical H&H type quarter rib holding one standing/ two folding leaf express rear sight. Rib is also mounted with H&H type QD scope mount. Matching front ramp holds silver bead with flip-up porcelain night bead. Tops of bbls have makers name and New Bond Street address, as well as Field rifle trial info. Bbl flats are stamped with London nitro proofs for .465 and 75 grains cordite, and 480 grain bullet. Bottoms of bbls are stamped with SNs and Whitworth sheaf of wheat trademarks. A narrow sling loop is screwed to bottom rib. Round bar “Royal” rifle action is fitted with typical rifle back locks, and features top tang which extends over comb, as well as automatic safety (SAFE inlaid in gold), hidden third fastener, bushed strikers, gold band tumbler end cocking indicators, H&H patent detachable locks, and dbl triggers (front checkered and articulated). There are two pegs fitted into action bar so that when bbls are closed, spring actuated cocking levers are disconnected from tumblers, allowing for stronger hammer blows to strikers. Action is and was orig blued, and has minimal engraving, consisting of small scroll borders and a few sprays of well cut scroll, at juncture of lockplates with action, in a style often referred to as “funeral”. “Holland & Holland” is on each lockplate. Charge, caliber, and case information are on bottom of action. Rifle appears to be no. “1” of a pair with “1” gold inlaid on top lever and forend lever pivot. Blued trigger guard has SN on tang which extends to blued steel grip cap with trap. Trap contains spare front sight numbered to this rifle. Nicely marbled and lightly figured European walnut capped pistol grip buttstock measures 14-1/8″ over brown leather covered pad. Stock features classic H&H styling with shadow line right hand cheekpiece, drop points, and point pattern grip checkering. A gold oval engraved with a monogram, “AB”, along with sling eye, are on toe line. Matching splinter forend has forward pivoting lever release. Drop at heel: approx 2-9/16″, drop at comb: approx 1-3/4″. Neutral cast. Weight without scope: 10 lbs. 12 oz. LOP: 14-1/8″. W. Ottway & Co 4X (?) scope with 3 post and dot reticle, is in H&H type rings, front ring engraved “Holland & Holland no. 28266”. What is possibly orig oak and leather case with leather corners, has new leather rectangle embossed “H & H .500 – .465 NE” “Rifle no. 28266” let in where old initials were. Interior is lined in light burgundy cloth, and has paper H&H label in lid along with charge card for this rifle. Case contains a plated round oil bottle, striker case, snap caps, along with a sight protector, mop, brush, and jag. There is also a .465 pull through cleaning kit. CONDITION: Excellent as refinished. Bbls retain nearly all of a London quality re-black, details lightly softened. Action retains nearly all of a re-blue over a few light marks, and a fairly deep ding on bottom. Stocks retain some of what appears to be their orig finish on forend and around action. Rear portion of butt has light refinishing after installation of relatively new pad. Bores are truly excellent, with strong, sharp rifling throughout. Action is tight. Bbls are on face. Ejectors are in time. Scope is excellent, optically clear. Case leather has many dark patches with some rubs through, many scuffs and bumps. Straps and newer handle are good. Interior cloth is good to fine. Partitions reinforced with areas re-lined, in cloth that doesn’t quite match. Accessories are excellent.
