VICTORIAN MAHOGANY STICK AND BALL FIRE SCREEN TOGETHER WITH FOUR PAISLEY TABLE COVERS.

Last quarter 19th century, American and India. The fire screen with oil on artist board painting of peacocks on a branch within a landscape, signed lower right “M. McGowan”. 1) With central black mandala having eight rays within dense paisley design with overall shades of red, indigo, and earth tones, all within an applied polychrome paneled border. 2) Paisley table runner with rectangular center crimson panel, the sides with polychrome trellis work within dog tooth guard borders, the ends with wide paisley panels of polychrome floral design, each end with a crimson fringe. 3) The central black mandala with lacy foliate border flanked by elongated paisley designs bordered by floral cartouches all with black borders in shades of crimson, brown and green all within a scrolling paisley border with fan shaped panels at the ends. 4) A large paisley fragment in shades of indigo, red, ivory and brown wrought overall with vertical floral design. SIZE: Fire screen overall 38″ t x 28-1/2″ w x 10″ d. 1) Approximately 72″ sq. 2) Approximately 8′-8″ l x 18″ w. 3) Approximately 64″ l x 66″ w. 4) Approximately 83″ l x 58″ w. CONDITION: Fire screen with one replaced dowel joined to upper portion of painting. Loss of three balls on top crest rail. Original surface, otherwise good with surface soiling. 1) Edges all with fraying, one corner with multiple marble sized holes, opposing corner with losses to end panels, otherwise good. 2) Structurally good, with no significant damage, some minor holes in main border, spot staining within central crimson panel, fair to good overall. 3) Deterioration to edges, fading along one half of table cover, general light soiling. 4) Cut along both ends, one large tear along one side near central mandala, central rondel with tear, small dark stains throughout, a minimum of three holes approximately 3″ in diameter, other imperfections also present, poor to fair. 51437-49 (400-600) – Lot 2600
