TWO CHINESE ORIENTAL RUGS.Early 20th century, China. The first a pictoral example with central pagoda flanked by seated young women set within a tree flanked by songbirds, cloud bands, flowering trees above a floral filled urn flanked by open pavilions and exotic birds. All above a pair of guardian lions all on an indigo blue ground within a large indigo main border filled with floral trelliswork within a beige floral guard border and outer bands of indigo. The second example with central floral rondel flanked by moths in shades of indigo within variegated indigo spandrels all on a pale gold field within an indigo floral main border, with floral sprays alternating with Shou symbols. SIZE: 1) 7′ 11″ x 9′ 8″. 2) 4′ 1″ x 6′ 10″. PROVENANCE: Maralyn Young estate, Arundel/Falmouth Maine, being sold unreserved. CONDITION: 1) With a diagonal tear at one corner extending into the outer edge of the guard border, the corner itself with evidence of dry rot. The rug otherwise retains good pile and strong color palette, end fringes with spot losses, otherwise restorable and in fair to good condition. 2) With areas of insect damage at one end between the spandrels and moths, in this area the thread has come loose from the foundation and is in need of immediate restorastion. 51412-66 (800-1,200) – Lot 2548
