RARE PILGRIM CENTURY PAINT DECORATED BLANKET CHEST.

New England. The single raised panel on back signed in black paint “J.N. 1726”. The pine chest with all original red painted surfaces and fine dark patina, the front with black splotch decoration and with black and white geometric designs. The front apron black band decorated with red and white vertical stripes. The case of square stile and rail-form, with pegged mortise-and-tenon joinery. The front with three recessed panels with applied molded edges. The case sides and back each fitted with a single heavily chamfered raised panel. The top comprised of single board with molded edge opening to an interior fitted with a till. Original staple hinges for lid remain attached to rear of case. SIZE: 26-1/2″ h x 44-1/2″ l x 20″ d. CONDITION: Lid with old split with two early nailed thin braces to underside. Original cleats long absent. One hinge with end loss. Note: Rosehead nails and mortise cuts beneath interior well indicate possibility of a long absent hidden lower shelf. Till lid and lock absent. Early chip loss at rear of both front legs. Evidence of small early nails around knothole in lid indicate a once present thin patch cover, now absent. This good example in untouched condition. 51331-36 (5,000-10,000) – Lot 2252
