RARE 38-STAR “COMET DESIGN” MEDALLION PATTERN AMERICAN FLAG, EX-MASTAI COLLECTION.

Printed on polished cotton. Very unusual design, with few examples known. There are triple circular wreaths of dancing stars surrounding a single star, with two trailing corner stars which Boleslaw Mastai nicknamed “Comet”. The Mastai Collection was sold at Sotheby’s October 10, 2002. SIZE: Flag: 26″ x 17-1/2″. Frame: 23-1/2″ x 29-1/2″. PROVENANCE: The Timothy Gallagher Collection. CONDITION: Flag has good appearance and aesthetics, though there are repairs at the many fractures found along hoist and several on fly. There are many cracks and small tears, and the typical red ink 2″ stamp “Mastai Collection” is found on verso of top white stripe. 51371-16 (2,000-3,000) – Lot 2075
