CHARLES VOLKMAR (American/French, 1841-1914) “NOVEMBER MORNING, MOUNT BIGELOW, ME”.

Oil on canvas Housed in a substantial period giltwood frame, with presentation plaque inscribed with title Signed, inscribed and dated lower left “Chas. Volkmar Paris 73.” Verso canvas stenciled “Frame De Lorette…S ottoz Paris”, inscribed in ink on verso “A November Day Mt. Bigelow ME”, signed “Chas. Volkmar 34 Boulevard De Clichey Paris” NOTE: Charles Volkmar is better known as a ceramic artist, however at the outset of his career he was an aspiring landscape painter. In 1861 he was accused of being a Confederate sympathizer so he left for Europe and settled in Paris. Many of his canvases depicted American subjects, however, were painted in Europe. He remained there for nearly 15 years. This painting was created in 1873 while he was studying under Henry Harpignies. He was a regular exhibitor in the Paris salons beginning in 1875. Overall 40″ x 59-1/2″ CONDITION: Patch on verso corresponding to restoration in central tree, craquelure and discolored varnish, several areas of inpaint throughout sky and mountains, one small area in water 51348-12 (4,000-6,000) – Lot 1005
