PAIR OF ROCOCO CAST-IRON GARDEN BENCHES.

Second half 19th century, American. Each bench with scrolling floral crest above a pierced back panel, cast with C-scrolled trelliswork. Each arm with scrolling rails continuing to hand grips, each cast with floral spray above foliate C-scrolls centering a trapezoidal seat cast with scrolling foliate vinery above a foliate frieze, raised on cabriole outswept molded legs, cast with floral pendants and sabots. NOTE: This pattern is often referred to as “Rose Garden”, as they are identical to a pair of garden benches located in the Rose Garden at the White House. SIZE: 36″ h (to back), 17″ h (at seat) x 46″ w (overall). CONDITION: Good condition, painted surface shows normal wear and discoloration due to weathering. NOTE: Crest rails show reinforcing in the pattern before casting, at points where these benches commonly developed cracks, showing an improvement to the original pattern. 50839-5 (2,000-4,000) – Lot 3158
