ATTRIBUTED TO JOHANNA KIRSCH (German, b. 1856) YOUNG WOMAN PLAYING A VIOLA DA GAMBA, AFTER SIR ANTHONY VAN DYCK (Flemish, 1599-1651).

Oil on canvas Housed in a 20th century black and gilt decorated Thulin frame, signed and dated “1935 Thulin #2732, A.” Unsigned. Attribution based on label affixed to verso stretcher with ink inscription that reads “kopier nach Van Dyk/Johanna Kirsch/Munchen”, pencil inscription on stretcher reads “J.M. Kirsch” and “Fran Kirsch/Nymph No. 47″ Note: Little is known about Johanna Kirsch other than she was a female German artist known for portraiture. One of several female German artists represented, Kirsch exhibited four works at the 1893 Chicago Worlds Fair. Her date of death is undocumented, however, believed to be near the turn-of-the-century. The original portrait by Sir Anthony van Dyck, painted c. 1635-1640, is in the collection of the Alte Pinakothek, Munich, Germany. The wife of the artist, Mary Ruthven, is the sitter SIZE: 44-3/4″ x 36-1/2”. Overall: 48-1/2″ x 40-1/2″ CONDITION: Good, restored condition. Abrasions to paint surface along bottom with minor flake losses lower left. Spotty, discolored varnish and skinned area lower right corner.
