MODEL 1865 SPENCER CARBINE IN ROCK ISLAND SADDLE SCABBARD.

SN 11075. Cal. 52. 20″ bbl. Blue and case colored finish with straight grained American walnut stocks. Carbine has been fitted with a Stabler cutoff. All markings are standard for this model. Standard sights. Saddle ring. Receiver has a “K” inspector mark in front of saddle ring bar. Buttplate has a “J” inspector mark on tang. Magazine tube is present in buttstock. No inspector marks are evident on stocks. Saddle scabbard is marked Rock Island Arsenal on right side along with “48” over “F” over “10”. This marking is for 10th Cavalry “Buffalo Soldiers”. PROVENANCE: The Estate of G. W. “Bill” Stewart of Sonora, Texas. CONDITION: Very good. Bbl retains a gray-brown finish overall with good sights. Rear sight is slightly bent. Model mark at breech is clear. Bore is dark with visible rifling. Receiver retains 50% silvered out case color overall with a sharp Spencer address on top of receiver. A sharp inspector mark on left side. Hammer and lockplate are a gray-brown patina overall. Stocks are very good with a missing chip at forward left wrist and a repaired chip in front of buttstock tang, a slight repaired chip behind saddle ring bar mount. Forearm has a gouge on left side in front of receiver and a crack. Buttplate is good with some slight traces of case color blended to a dark brown patina. Saddle scabbard is very good with clear markings and intact straps. A very good Spencer carbine that definitely saw service in Texas during the Indian Wars. 49973-53, 49973-345, TEP (1,500-3,000) – Lot 1529
