RARE & PROBABLY UNIQUE CIVIL WAR AMMUNITION BOX FROM U.S. NAVY YARD FOR HALL CARBINE WITH 36 CARTRIDGES DISPLAYED.Well-made Naval ammunition box measures about 8.5 x 8 x 9.75″ including hinged lid stenciled on face “NAVAL LABORATORY / WASHINGTON” & on top “AMMUNITION / FOR / HALL CARBINE / CHARGE 70 GRS”. Inside lid is stenciled “ORDNANCE LABORATORY” in arc above “U.S.N. YARD/ WASHINGTON”. The paper pasted tag reads “JUNE 1860 / J.A.D. INSPECTR. / U.S.N.Y. NORFOLK “. Inspector initials are those of John A. Dahlgren, famous American Naval Officer & “Father of American Naval Ordnance”. Dahlgren invented numerous cannon & ammunition utilized by U.S. Military during the Civil War & after. PROVENANCE: Rex Patterson Collection. CONDITION: Exterior of box has numerous scuffs, bruises & other blemishes while still retaining about 3/4 of its orig red varnished finish. Painted stencil is only partially discernible on top as seen in photos though front & interior are crisp. Interior of box is missing bottom of lock. Still retaining orange painted tin lining with 36 uninspected but probable facsimile tied Hall cartridges with red & white strings. Cartridges are held in place by a piece of plexiglass tacked so they don’t move. This was once part of a Hall rifle display. 50195-5 JS (4,000-6,000) – Lot 1522
