STARR ARMS CIVIL WAR BREECH LOADING CARBINE.

SN 2701. Cal. 54. 21″ rnd bbl. Blue and case colored finish with straight grained American walnut stocks. Bbl has standard carbine sights. “STARR ARMS YONKERS, NY” stamped in front of rear sight. Breech end of bbl at left was “L.A.B” inspector mark. SN is stamped on bottom of bbl under forend. Receiver is stamped “STARRS PATENT/SEPT.14 1858″. Lockplate is marked STARR ARMS CO. YONKERS, NY” with a “B” inspector’s mark. Breechblock is numbered on left side. Assembly no. 936 is stamped on bottom of bbl and on operating lever. Stock shows remnants of cartouche on left wrist. Brass buttplate with “B” inspector mark on tang. Starr carbines were issued to Union Cavalry regiments operating in the West during the Civil War. PROVENANCE: The Estate of G. W. “Bill” Stewart of Sonora, Texas. CONDITION: Very good. Bbl is a deep brown patina overall with slight muzzle wear and sharp markings. Sights are good. Bore is dark with visible rifling. Receive is also dark brown patina overall with sharp markings. Hammer and lever are a dark brown patina. Stock is very good with only very slight traces of inspector cartouche on left wrist. Stock has numerous handling marks and dents with a black stain toward toe of butt. Buttplate is a mustard patina with considerable staining. A scarce Civil War Starr carbine that probably saw service in the Western theater during the Civil War. 49973-48 TEP (800-1,500) – Lot 1520
