TWO CARVED MAHOGANY CHIPPENDALE SIDE CHAIRS.Last quarter 18th Century. 1) Serpentine crest rail above a pierced slat carved overall with scrolling leaf tips, joined to the molded trapezoidal seat frame, fitted with a slipp seat frame. Raised on molded and chamfered square legs, joined by a recessed box stretcher. 2) A ribbonback example with scrolling crest rail continuing to leaf tip carved ears above three conforming pierced and molded shaped slats above a saddle shaped trapezoidal overupholstered seat. Raised on molded, chamfered square frontal legs, joined by a recessed rectangular box stretcher. SIZE: 1) Height of back: 2-37-1/4″ Height of seat: 16-1/2″ Width of seat: 21″ 2) Height of back: 37″ Height of seat: 17-1/2″ Width of seat: 21″ CONDITION: Both chairs with original surface, now aged darkened. 1) Repair to stile at juncture to crestrail, additionally structural repair at juncture of back splat to rear seatrail with losses to base of splat at lower corners. Damages to right leg at juncture to seat rail and repaired damage to proper left front leg, similarly at seat rail. 2) Repair to both stiles at crest rail.
