*RARE AND FAMOUS WAH-KING THOM OF HAWAII PARKER A-1 SPECIAL DOUBLE BARREL SHOTGUN. Cal. 12 ga. SN 239607. One of the most famous Parker shotguns known, built on a 1-1/2 frame with 26” barrels, choked “Skeet In/Skeet Out”, with ejectors and Miller single trigger. The barrels have tapered matted rib with double ivory beads and are marked on the rib with the maker’s name and address and “Peerless Steel”. The receiver, top tang, opening lever and triggerguard have full coverage spectacular, extremely fine, floral and arabesque pattern engraving. The fences are triple scalloped with floral and arabesque pattern engraving, the foreend iron is matching engraved. The triggerguard tang has the serial number in gold and the top tang, the letter “S” in gold. The water table and standing breech, as well as the inside of the foreend iron are very finely jeweled. The wood is highly figured American walnut with a full coverage checkered, splinter forearm, having raised borders and a carved fleur-de-lis just above the foreend iron. The buttstock is 13-1/2” over a carved and checkered skeleton butt with rounded heel and matching engraved metal. The side panels are relief carved fleur-de-lis with fine checkering and the wrist has an engraved horn grip cap and has extensive checkering with fleur-de-lis pattern. The engraving patterns extend 2-7/8” over the chambers with fine, narrow muzzle patterns. This shotgun was extensively featured on page 70 of “The Parker Shotgun” by Larry Baer. This write-up includes a family history letter written by Henry Thom, Wah-King Thom’s son. The Thoms were of Chinese origin and the grandfather reportedly had emigrated to the United States in 1880 and settled in California, later moving to Hawaii and establishing businesses and rice plantations there. Wah-King Thom was the oldest of eight children, born in 1889. In 1913 he apparently established his own business as a commission merchant and manufacturer’s representative. He later was credited with establishing the firearms industry in Hawaii and died in 1972. Mr. Baer states that he purchased this shotgun directly from the Thom Estate. Accompanying this fine shotgun is the original green felt lined brown leather trunk case with a silver metal plate on the front 4” long x 1-1/4” wide, bearing the inscription “Wah-King Thom/Honolulu”. Inside the case, in the lid, is an original Parker tri-fold, 6-1/2” x 5-1/4”, entitled “Congratulations on Your Choice of a Parker Gun” and features the manufacturing process and attributes of the shotgun. Also included is a yellow cardboard tag, 5-7/8” x 2-7/8”, with black lettering featuring on one side a line drawing of the Parker action and on the other side, maintenance instructions. Also included is a small black & white photograph, 4-1/4” x 3”, featuring an Oriental gentleman behind the counter in a gun shop holding a scoped sporting rifle with the notation on the back, “Mr. Wah-King Thom”. A hinged lid compartment inside the case contains small cleaning implements. CONDITION: Excellent plus, the barrels retain 98-99% strong bright original rust blue, the receiver and opening lever retain virtually all its original case colors with only very minor edge wear. Triggerguard and skeleton buttplate metal retain virtually all their original blue. Wood is sound and retains about all of its bright original varnish with only minor handling and storage marks. Case is excellent with slightly scuffed corners and modestly darkened from age. The tag, tri-fold and photograph are very good. Bores are bright and shiny. 4-47484 JL (70,000-100,000)
