AMERICAN CIVIL WAR ARTILLERY SHORT JACKET AND 1864 SOLDIER’S DIARY: GEORGE COOK, COMPANY E, 13TH NEW YORK HEAVY ARTILLERY. Regulation dark blue wool U.S. artillery uniform short jacket having a 12-button front with red worsted tape decoration at collar, cuffs, jacket front and bottom and back. The jacket is lined in a coarsely woven brown wool fabric, sleeves are lined with unbleached linen. Right sleeve lining displays the size number “2″ and the remainder of the jacket is unmarked (no inspector’s marks, ordnance or depot markings). The jacket is accompanied by a small soldier’s diary partially filled out for the beginning of the year 1864. The contents are most illegible, in period pencil and ink, however the soldier’s identification is clearly marked as follows: “Address geo Cook/Co E 13 Heavy artillery/Fort Schuyler/N.Y.” The diary is accompanied by a small notarized note dated September 1999 which states that the diary and jacket were purchased together. It is unlikely that the two began their life as a pair. The uniform jacket is a typical example of an unissued surplus jacket. The group contains photocopied records from the National Archives for George Cook. CONDITION: The uniform jacket is in superb condition having little or no mothing, retaining excellent color with only a few separated interior seams. Two button from the front of the jacket are separated but tied and pinned on the interior. The diary is in fair to poor condition, with pages missing, cover tattered and mostly illegible. 4-47031 (2,500-2,750)
