THE SHIP “RESOLUTE” WHALING IN THE ARCTIC. Oil on canvas scene shows a black hulled whaling ship sailing right to left through iceberg laden water. Six men on board with some sails up and smoke billowing from the one stack. The ship’s name emblazoned on bow. Five small boats mounted with harpoon canons at bow carrying six men pursuing whales. Signed lower left “J.T. Duncan, Lochee” and signed bottom right “Painted by P. Stewart Dundee”. Housed in an antique bird’s-eye maple frame with good liner. Note: The depicted ship fished between 1881 and 1887; in 1886 the ship carried Robert E. Perry to Greenland, later facing disaster when she was crushed by ice in Notre Dame Bay off Newfoundland. SIZE: 25-3/4″ x 35″. Overall: 32-1/4″ x 42″. CONDITION: Good with some surface dirt. 9-29144 (3,000-5,000)
