RARE & UNUSUAL SIOUX ROSEBUD AGENCY SMITH & WESSON REVOLVER WITH SIOUX MARKED BELT & HOLSTER. SN 75568. Cal. 44 American. Revolver is a 2nd Model American single action revolver with bbl reduced to 5″ and front sight professionally relocated. Top of rib is hand stamped “ROSEBUD AGENCY, D.T.”. Frame is engraved, probably by L.D. Nimschke, with foliate & floral arabesque patterns and a fan pattern around the hinge pin. Back strap is engraved in geometric patterns. Mounted with 2-pc, homemade, replacement walnut grips secured with a wood screw and decorated with about 65 small brass brads in the shape of a cross at the top of each grip with other patterns down the sides and across the bottoms. These grips are typical of Indian use and show tremendous wear. Accompanied by an early St. Joseph marked belt & holster rig consisting of a 46″ x 2″ belt made of medium weight belting leather with a rectangular German silver light weight buckle with riveted billet. The tongue steps down to 1-1/4″ and the entire belt has a dbl line border. Center of belt has 25 sewn-on cartridge loops and the barely legible branded “SIOUX” on right side and “TRIBE” on left side. Holster is about 9″ x 5″, 1-pc with a sewn back edge and is missing the Cheyenne style plug. Face of holster is very nicely tooled in foliate & floral patterns with a fine stippled background and multiple border patterns. It has a sgl loop riveted to the skirt that is decorated with a running snake pattern and multiple border patterns. The skirt is tooled in feather border patterns completely around exposed edges and is marked on the skirt below the loop in a stamped shield shape with the maker’s name and “ST. JOSEPH”. Below that on the shield is a small 5-pointed star which has been observed on other Sioux-used firearms & accessories as being a tribal clan or good luck marking. Holster also has a thumb snap at the top and the top rear of the skirt has several belt loop cuts. Additionally accompanied by a color photograph of this revolver with a caption giving credit to the collection of Dr. James Brown. Dr. Brown was a veteran of WWII and obtained his degree in veterinary medicine in 1952 from Kansas State University. He practiced large animal veterinary medicine in Huron, South Dakota, and later switched to a small animal practice in Austin, Texas. While in South Dakota he was very active in politics and served as a county chairman and member of the State Republican Platform Committee and later became the Secretary of the South Dakota Republican State Convention. He was also active in the South Dakota Veterinary Medical Association and eventually became Vice-President of the American Veterinary Medical Association. After his move to Texas he became very active in gun rights issues and headed the Texas State Rifle Association (TSRA) Political Action Committee and under their umbrella was primarily responsible for the passage of a number of pro-firearms related bills including the landmark legislation for the concealed handgun law. In 1985 and 1988 he was elected to the National Rifle Association Board of Directors where he served on the Gun Collection Committee. He remained active in the TSRA until about 2005 when he formally retired. He passed away on Sept. 24, 2008. The foregoing information was from an article that appeared in the TSRA Sportsman magazine, Vol. 40, No. 4, in a 2-page article by Alice Tripp. Undoubtedly Dr. Brown must have obtained this revolver & rig during his work in South Dakota. As a veterinarian he almost certainly would have had close access to the Indian reservations and as a respected veterinarian would have likely become close to any number of tribal members. PROVENANCE: Dr. James Brown Collection. CONDITION: Revolver is fair with no orig finish remaining showing very heavy wear and heavy pitting. Metal is overall a dark gray patina. Grips show heavy wear with a dark hand worn patina. Some of the screws are heavily battered. Hammer is without safety notch and the hand probably has a broken spring, otherwise mechanics are fine, worn black bore. Belt & holster also show heavy wear with the belt very soft & fragile with crackled surface and retains about 60-70% orig finish. Stitching on several of belt loops is broken. Holster also shows heavy wear along front edge, on the loop, around top of holster & thumb strap. 4-40789 JR240 (6,000-10,000)
