COLT 1ST MODEL DRAGOON PERCUSSION REVOLVER. SN 4039. Cal. 44. Usual configuration with 7-1/2″ oct to rnd bbl, altered front sight and 1-line left hand New York City address. Colt’s patent on left side of frame is obscured by pitting, however the tiny “U.S.” is visible. The square-back brass trigger guard & back strap contain a 1-pc walnut grip that is very dark & oil stained obscuring any numbers in back strap channel. There were approx. 7,000 of 1st Model Dragoons produced in the period 1848 to about 1850. These revolvers, especially martial pieces, saw extreme hard service on the frontier with limited or minimal maintenance and are rarely ever found unaltered with orig finish. They continued in service right through the Civil War and even later again on the frontier when they were sold as surplus or retained by their Civil War soldier owners who participated in the great Westward expansion. They remained in service well into the 1870s as one of the most powerful handguns ever produced and retained this distinction until the advent of the 44 Magnum. CONDITION: About very good, all matching except wedge which is numbered “015” and grip whose number is obscured. Overall retains a crusty brown attic patina with scattered light to moderate pitting. Cyl is a smooth crusty brown patina with all six safety pins crisp. Trigger guard & back strap retain a medium mustard patina with a few nicks & scratches, showing moderate to heavy wear. Grip has a chipped left toe and also shows heavy wear with moderate to severe shrinkage and a couple of small cracks on right side. Mechanics are fine, strong bore with scattered heavy pitting. 4-40611 JR131 (6,000-10,000)
