DISPLAY LOT OF COLT MODEL 1877 DA LIGHTNING REVOLVER WITH FINE EARLY CRIPPLE CREEK, COLORADO BELT & HOLSTER RIG. SN 92718. Cal. 38 Colt. Revolver is nickel finish with 4-1/2″ bbl, half moon front sight and 2-line address with caliber marking on left side. Left side of frame has 3-line patent dates and it is mounted with smooth 2-pc pearl grips. Left grip has a repaired hole at the toe. Grip frame of revolver is missing its grip locator pin. Accompanied by a Colt factory letter identifying this revolver in caliber 38 Colt with 4-1/2″ bbl, nickel finish and pearl stocks. Under special notation is “Made S.A.”. It was shipped to J. Deutz & Son, address unavailable, Feb. 1893 in a 1-gun shipment. A brief Google search disclosed that Joseph Deutz came to American in 1848 and on to San Antonio in 1850. He worked in the hardware business for others and with partners until 1879 when he established his own business in Laredo, TX, under the name Deutz & Koehler which later became J. Deutz & Son. This information then makes this a Texas-used Colt or possibly having Mexican connections. Belt & holster rig consist of a fine dbl loop holster marked on the front with the cartouche “Wm ARDELL / CRIPPLE CREEK” with “MAKER” in large letters in the center. Holster is one piece of leather with narrow skirt and two loops with face of holster nicely decorated with three raised borders. Rear edge of holster is stitched and toe is open. Accompanied by 38″ long x 2-1/4″ wide money/cartridge belt with rectangular nickeled steel buckle and about 35 sewn-on cartridge loops for small caliber. Cartridge loops have been re-stitched with fine rawhide and both tongue & buckle billets appear to be replacements. These items are mounted in a deep elaborate shadow box picture frame with green felt backing and has four cards & a pair of dice mounted in lower left corner. Lower right corner had something mounted which is now missing. PROVENANCE: David Crocker Estate Collection. CONDITION: Revolver is good to very good. Overall retains 25-30% orig nickel with exposed metal a gray patina. Grips have the repaired hole in left toe, otherwise are fine with oil & rust staining on right side at frame, and retain great fire & color. Mechanics are fine, strong bright bore with scattered light pitting. Although the factory letter says that it was configured single action it apparently has been restored to dbl action function. Holster is fine & supple with some slight crackling on the face with the skirt dry and with crackled edges. Belt is soft & supple with crackled surface and retains most of its orig russet brown finish. Frame is fine. 4-36877 JR359 (3,500-5,000)
