VERY RARE REMINGTON TYPE III SPORTING SPLIT BREECH ROLLING BLOCK CARBINE. SN NONE. Cal. 38 RF. When the contracts for the Type I & Type II carbines were completed Remington retrieved their machinery & parts from Savage Arms and continued to assemble carbines in various configurations and calibers for the civilian market. Unfortunately, given the glut of surplus arms on the market immediately after the Civil War, their efforts were largely unsuccessful and fewer than 1,000 of these rare carbines were ever completed. This model was advertised in the Remington 1866 catalog. Reference Flayderman’s Guide to Antique American Firearms. This sporting carbine has a 22-3/8″ tapered rnd bbl, pinched blade front sight with bead, a fixed V-notch rear sight and a simple tang sight with 3″ staff dovetailed into the top tang. Tang sight has a friction elevation slide and a musket style tension spring with recesses at each end in the tang. Left side of receiver has two plugged holes from where the sling bar was removed. Mounted with very highly figured, center crotch, American walnut with uncheckered, rounded, tapered forearm and straight stock with a smooth steel carbine buttplate. Wrist of buttstock is coarse checkered with flat squarish diamonds. This is one of the great rarities in Remington long arms. PROVENANCE: Bruce M. Cady Estate Collection. CONDITION: Very fine plus. Bbl retains about 95-96% orig blue, thinning around the muzzle with one small spot of pitting. Receiver, bottom tang & trigger guard retain most of their orig case colors, moderately faded on receiver, turning to dark on bottom tang & trigger guard. Buttplate is a cleaned metal patina. Wood is sound and retains most of its orig factory varnish with a few minor handling & storage marks. Mechanics are crisp, brilliant shiny bore. 4-36931 JR235 (4,000-7,000)
