RARE NEW HAVEN ARMS VOLCANIC CARBINE.

RARE NEW HAVEN ARMS VOLCANIC CARBINE. SN 141. Cal. 41. Rare carbine with 16-1/2″ oct bbl with integral magazine, German silver front sight and receiver mounted rear sight with elevation adjustment wheel. Mounted with very nicely figured, slab sawed American walnut with crescent brass buttplate that has faceted tang. SN was noted on left side of lower tang under the wood, the top of the heel of the buttstock under the buttplate and inside the toe of the buttplate. Buttplate tang screw is somewhat battered and artificially aged. Top receiver tang screw is a replacement and is unnumbered. All other screws have the number “141”. Bottom of frame is marked “11” just below the elevator opening. No further disassembly was effected to check for matching numbers. According to Flayderman’s Guide to Antique American Firearms only about 1,000 carbines were produced in the period 1857-1860 in three bbl lengths making this indeed a very rare firearm. PROVENANCE: David Crocker Estate Collection. CONDITION: Fine to very fine, all matching except front top tang screw as noted. Bbl & magazine tube retain traces of orig blue being mostly a smooth plum brown patina, thinner on bbl with some light surface spotting. Frame is crisp & clean with very lightly worn edges and overall retains a medium to dark brass patina. Rear sight retains 30-40% fire blue and the carrier about 30% fire blue. Lever retains 25-30% orig blue with balance flaked, not worn to a light patina. Hammer retains 50-60% dark case colors. Stock is sound with a minor chip at left heel and a few scattered minor handling & storage scattered nicks & scratches and overall retains about all of its strong orig factory varnish. Mechanics are crisp, brilliant shiny bore. 4-36888 JR312 (25,000-35,000)
