*JAMES PURDEY AND SONS SIDELOCK EJECTOR GAME GUN. SN 17702. (ca. 1903) Cal. 12 Ga. 2-1/2″ Chambers. 30″ Chopper lump steel barrels are engraved “J. Purdey & Sons. Audley House. South Audley Street. London. Made of Sir Joseph Whitworth’s Fluid – Pressed Steel” on narrow concave game rib. Bbl flats show London nitro proofs for 2-1/2″ chambers. Bottoms of bbls are stamped with SN. Bottom of left bbl have “Choke” and initials “H.M” (H. Meers? barrel maker). Loop is stamped with tube nos. “27698” and “27699”. Beesley patent self-opening action features automatic safety (“Safe” inlaid in gold), bushed strikers, engraved arrow tumbler end cocking indicators, and double triggers. Action and lockplates are engraved with meticulously cut small shaded scroll with rose bouquet highlights in Purdey house style, and was probably executed by J. Lucas, noted Purdey engraver. Bottom of action is engraved “Purdey’s Patent” and lockplates with “J. Purdey & Sons.” Top lever is engraved “Patent”. Trigger guard has standard scroll on bow, and SN on long tang. Well marbled and slightly figured flesh-toned Circassian walnut straight grip buttstock measures 14-3/8″ over dark brown leather covered pad, and features drop points, 22 LPI point pattern checkering with double line border, and silver oval on toe line engraved “R.M”. Matching splinter forend has Anson release. Iron is stamped with SN and actioner’s initials “H.S” (Stanley ?). Bore diameter: left -.734, right -.734. Bore restrictions: left -.032, right -.004. Wall thickness: left -.022, right -.026. Drop at heel: 2-1/8″, drop at comb: 1-3/8″. Gun is cast on for left hand shooter, and triggers are turned. Weight: 6 lbs. 14.7 oz, LOP 14-3/8″. CONDITION: Fine, as refinished. Bbls retain 95% of London quality re-black, rib engraving considerably washed. Action and lockplates are polished bright with engraving slightly washed. Trigger guard, trigger plate, and top lever are re-blued, and retain most of that blue, but engraving is considerably washed. Screws show use; polishing and engraving is quite blurred. Stocks have been refinished, and retain most of that oil finish. Checkering has been partially re-cut, and is still a bit dirty. Action is tight. Bbls are on face. Ejectors are in time. Drop shows some wear, but iron is not yet touching action. Bores are bright and shiny, showing evidence of having been lightly honed, and have a few scattered light pits, mostly towards muzzles. 4-40078 MGM40 (12,000-17,000)
