*SUPERB CASED PAIR JAMES PURDEY AND SONS EXTRA FINISH, HAND DETACHABLE, SELF-OPENING SIDELOCK, EJECTOR GAME GUNS WITH EXTRA BARRELS. SN 29441/ 29442. Cal. 20 Ga. 2-3/4″ Chambers. 27″ Chopper lump bbls with raised concave game ribs are engraved “J. Purdey & Sons” and “Audley House, South Audley Street, London, England.” on tops. Ribs have either “1” or “1” (underlined), or “2” or “2” (underlined) inlaid in gold to denote each gun and choke selection. Underlined bbls are modified and full, whereas the plain bbls are imp cyl and mod. Bbl flats are stamped with 1992 London nitro proofs. Choke information is engraved on bottoms of rear lumps. SNs are stamped on bottoms of bbls. “Purdey” and barrelmakers initials “RR” are on bottoms of left bbls. Tube numbers are on loops. Coin finished, Beesley patent, self-opening sidelock actions feature automatic safeties (“Safe” inlaid in gold), side clips, third fasteners, bushed strikers, gold line tumbler end cocking indicators, and dbl triggers (front hinged). Locks are hand detachable by half-turn of removable lever/ pin, for each lock, in place of normal lock pins, which are also supplied. Actions, lockplates, trigger guards, and top levers are engraved with very finely cut large open flowing scrolled acanthus with strap work highlights in manner and style inspired by Harry Kell. Engravers signature “A. Powell” is on trigger plates beside front triggers. “J. Purdey & Sons” is inlaid in gold on arched ribands on bottoms of actions, “London” is in shaped rectangle below. “J. Purdey & Sons” is inlaid in gold on sides of actions under lockplates. “1” or “2” is on each top lever, also in gold. SNs are on bands on each trigger guard tang. Very well matched, deep flesh-toned, intricately marbled, and flame-figured Circassian walnut straight grip buttstocks measure 14-3/16″ over checkered wood butts, and feature typical Purdey drop points and 22 LPI checkering with mullered borders. There are gold ovals inlaid on toe lines, engraved with initials “PFD”. Matching ejector splinter forends have Anson releases with “1” or “2” gold inlaid on each tip. Makers leather two-gun motor case, with provision for extra barrels, has stitched leather corners, and leather trimmed tan canvas outer cover. Interior is lined in royal blue cloth, with black leather gold-embossed Purdey label. Case contains some cleaning brushes, and tan leather folding wallet containing spare main springs, ejector springs, and strikers for each gun, along with main spring vise, and takedown levers or lockpins. All parts are either serial numbered, or marked for each gun. (It takes approximately two days labor for a skilled and experienced craftsman to make and fit a Purdey main spring.) CONDITION: Excellent, have seen very little use. Bbls retain virtually all of their fine factory black. Some minor sharp marks toward breech ends of ribs on bbls “1” underlined and “2” underlined. Actions and other metal parts retain virtually all of their original coin finish, with only one or two minor marks, and no discoloration. Stocks retain nearly all of their orig rubbed oil finish with grip areas thinning, and some minor marks. Actions are tight. Bbls are on face. Ejectors on gun no. “2” are slightly out of time. Bores are excellent. Case leather is excellent, well protected by its outer cover, which shows some scuffs, and fading. Interior cloth is excellent, a bit dusty. Label is excellent.
