*MAGNIFICENT JAMES PURDEY AND SONS DELUXE EXTRA FINISH SIDELOCK EJECTOR DOUBLE RIFLE WITH CASE AND ACCESSORIES. SN 29557. Cal..470 Nitro Express. Completed in 1997. This very finely made and finished dangerous game rifle has beautifully struck 24″ chopper lump barrels which are engraved “James Purdey & Sons.” and “Audley House, South Audley Street, London, England.” on tops. Barrel flats are stamped with London nitro proofs. SN is on bottom of barrels, and tube numbers are on loop. Barrels are fitted with file matted quarter rib and front base. One standing and one folding gold-lined leaf express rear sight is dovetailed through rib and marked for 30 and 70 yards. Brass bead with white porcelain flip-up night sight is longitudinally dovetailed into front base which is also fitted with very finely filed, finished and checkered hood. Mid-rib is engraved “.470 Nitro”. Sling loop in lozenge-shaped base is soldered to bottom rib. Coin finished Beesley patent self-opening action is fitted with non-automatic bolted safety. “Safe” is inlaid in gold, as is “Bolted”. Top strap extends over comb. Action is fitted with reinforcing bolsters, bushed strikers, side clips, and quarter inch rib extension with Purdey third fastener. Tumbler ends have inlaid gold lines as cocking indicators. Action, lockplates, single beaded trigger guard, trap grip cap, and top lever are engraved with very finely cut and nicely shaded bold scrolled acanthus outlining Bulino vignettes of dangerous game. A big bull Elephant seems to emerge from the mist on bottom of action. There are a pair of Cape Buffalo (a very young and a very old bull) in a highly detailed scene on left lockplate; and a superb Rhino in open woodland with hills in background is on the right. Rhino has a tick bird on his shoulder with another about to land. Fences and bolsters are decorated with full relief carved acanthus, with very dark, shaded background. “J. Purdey & Sons” is in arched ribbon around trigger plate pin. SN is on trigger guard tang. “J. Purdey & Sons” is on riband on front of lockplates. All of this fine work is by Bradley Tallett who was trained at Purdey’s where his father also worked. Many examples of his work are illustrated in “British Gun Engraving” by Douglas Tate. His signature appears in grass below Buffalo, and in mist below Elephant. Exceptionally fine, beautifully marbled, and finely figured European walnut full pistol grip buttstock measures 14-5/8″ over thin mahogany brown bead-outlined leather covered pad, and features standard Purdey drop points and 26 LPI checkering along with classic shadow line right hand cheekpiece. Sling loop and vacant gold oval are on toe line. Matching slight beavertail ejector forend has Anson release. SN and actioners initials “A T” are on inside of iron. Drop at heel: Approx. 2-3/8″, drop at comb: Approx. 1-5/8″. Weight: 10 lbs. 12.5 oz, LOP 14-5/8″. Extremely fine tan thistle leather makers case with leather trimmed canvas outer cover is lined in burgundy cloth, with black leather gold-embossed Purdey label with additional paper charge and specifications card. Very finely finished, James Purdey marked accessories include ebony handled striker key and turn screws, nickel-plated round oil bottle, as well as a pair of snap caps. There is also a matching, but unmarked, 3-pc brass and ebony cleaning rod, as well as an unmarked nickel-plated striker bottle. Also in case are Purdey bench cloth, box of shotgun patches, and black leather wallet containing cleaning brushes and mops. PROVENANCE: Folder containing Purdey factory letter pertaining to this rifle, and various Purdey catalogs and mailings. CONDITION: Essentially new. Does not appear to have been fired after proof testing. Bbls show only a couple of small marks on bottom rib from contact with forend, and minor rub marks on lumps from assembly and dis-assembly. Stocks appear to be blemish-free. Case is excellent with only a few minor rubs in canvas outer cover. Interior has some compressions in cloth from contact with rifle. Accessories are as new. A superior, well-balanced, and great handling Safari rifle that would be the center piece to most any collection. 4-40792 MGM184 (120,000-170,000)
