RARE AUTHENTIC, UNALTERED SPRINGFIELD ARMORY KRAG MODEL 1892 MILITARY RIFLE. SN 9212. Cal. .30 US (30-40.) Standard Krag rifle with 29-1/2″ bbl, pedestal front sight and 1,800 yd. military ladder rear sight. Receiver has usual markings with the date “1894”. It is mounted in a 1-pc walnut stock with grasping grooves in the forestock and a short hand guard from receiver to rear band. Front band/bayonet lug has dbl straps with special cut for the cleaning rod mortised into the tip of the forestock. Front band also has a stacking swivel and the middle band has a sling loop with corresponding loop in the butt stock. Butt stock is fitted with an orig smooth, steel buttplate without trap. Left side of the wrist has a legible cartouche and the date “1895”. Bottom of the wrist has the “P” in a circle proof. Bottom half of the forestock is grooved and has an original 2nd type slotted-head cleaning rod. Extractor does not have a hold-open pin nor is the receiver notched for a hold-open pin. Very few of these rare rifles survive today, most having been converted with model 1896 improvements with the solid cleaning rod eliminated in favor of a jointed rod in a trap under the buttplate. This rifle appears to be correct and original in all respects. This is an extremely rare and desirable U.S. Military collectible, almost never encountered in complete and orig configuration. CONDITION: Fine. Bbl retains a plum-blue patina overall with receiver, side plate and cartridge box a mottled black patina. Front band retains 30-40% thin orig blue with the balance turning plum. Middle band retains traces orig blue with the balance a blue-brown patina. Trigger guard and buttplate are a dark brown patina. Stock has the obligatory cracks behind the bottom corners of the cut-outs for the side plate and cartridge box and a hairline in the hand guard back of the rear sight, otherwise wood is sound with handling and use, nicks, dings & scratches showing heavy wear around the receiver with a small gouge in the hand guard and heavy wear at the rear edge and overall retains a fine, hand-worn patina. Mechanics are fine. Strong, dark, corrosive ammo bore. 4-40847 JR265 (5,000-7,000)
