SCARCE SHARPS PANEL BORCHARDT NO. 1 MID-RANGE SINGE SHOT TARGET RIFLE. SN 7060. Cal. Appears to be 40-70 Sharps Straight. Fine early panel Borchardt with 30″ heavy tapered rnd bbl with windgage spirit level globe front sight, Lawrence Patent ladder rear sight and a long range tang sight with 5-1/4″ staff graduated to 4,000 yards on left edge. There is an additional sight base in heel of stock. Receiver is color case hardened with wood panel inserts and a sgl trigger. Top of bbl has the “OLD RELIABLE” and “BRIDGEPORT” markings. Mounted with very nicely figured, checkered English walnut with schnable tip forearm and serpentine pistol grip stock, missing its buttplate. Bottom of bbl, under forearm, rear edge of forearm, inside bbl channel of forearm and front edge of buttstock are all stamped or marked with serial number matching receiver. According to the book Sharps Firearms, Sellers, only 215 of these fine rifles were produced in the period Oct. 1877 – Oct. 1880. PROVENANCE: David D. Sobel Single Shot Rifle Collection. CONDITION: Very good to fine. Bbl retains 92-93% orig finish turning plum with wear around muzzle. Receiver retains smoky case colors on left side and in sheltered areas with balance turned silver to dark. Stock has a hairline on left side of wrist and another back of the top tang with a chip also back of top tang, otherwise wood is sound with a couple of deep scratches on buttstock and usual handling & use marks and retains about 90% orig varnish on buttstock and about 75% on forearm. Toe of buttstock has a couple of minor chips. Wood panels in receiver retain 75-80% orig varnish. Mechanics are fine, bright shiny bore with some minor roughness just in front of chamber. 4-39131 JR22 (5,000-8,000)
