*W. J. JEFFERY MAGNUM SQUARE BRIDGE MAUSER TAKE DOWN CARBINE. SN 24747. Cal. .333 Jeffery. This unusual carbine has 20″ round bbl engraved “W. J. Jeffery & Co. Ltd 26, Bury Street. St. James’ London. 24747” on top between sights, and “Made expressly for” “Abercrombie & Fitch Co. New York.” on top rear. Right rear of bbl is stamped with Birmingham nitro proofs for 333 Express, 42 grains of cordite, and 300 grain bullet. Single folding express rear sight is dovetailed through sweated-on banded raised base. Ivory bead front sight is longitudinally dovetailed into banded-on base with Jeffery’s removable hood mechanism. Hood is not present. There is a sling eye soldered to bottom of bbl. Commercial Magnum Mauser action has matted top square bridge. Left rail is stamped “Waffenfabrik Mauser – Oberndorf A/N.” A rare Lyman model no. 35 rear sight is mounted on bolt stop. Bolt has standard pear shape knob, long cocking piece, and flag safety. There is a captive screw through the right front of receiver ring. When loosened it allows bbl to be removed from action. Forend remains attached to bbl. There are two steel plates between the buttstock and forend. Bottom metal has drop box to hold four cartridges, for a total of five shots. Hinged floorplate is retained by button release in trigger guard bow. Trigger is single stage. Lightly streaked and figured European walnut pistol grip stock measures 14-1/8″ over checkered steel trap buttplate. Stock features horn grip cap, horn forend tip, inset steel tang extension to help absorb recoil of action, and 18 LPI flattop point pattern checkering with mullered borders. Drop at heel: Approx 2-3/4″, drop at comb: Approx 2″. Weight: 8 lbs. 0 oz, LOP 14-1/8″. CONDITION: Excellent. Metal retains nearly all of its original brownish blue. Stock retains virtually all of its original oil finish with numerous marks and slight scratches from handling and use. There are two minor small cracks (about 1/4″) in front of trigger guard. There is some minor moth damage to grip cap and forend tip. Buttplate retains approx. 40-50% of its original blue. Action screws, floorplate release button, and bolt release retain nearly all of their fire-blue. Lyman sight retains most of its original blue. Bore is excellent, bright and shiny, sharp rifling throughout. No evidence of throat erosion.
