*EXCEPTIONALLY FINE GRIFFIN AND HOWE MAGNUM SQUARE BRIDGE BIG GAME RIFLE. SN 1015. Cal. .505 Gibbs. Massive 26″ round bbl is engraved “No. 1015 Griffin & Howe, Inc. New York” on top, and “Poldi Anti-Corro”, (Logo), “.505 Gibbs” on left side near action. Gold bead front sight is longitudinally dovetailed into typical, but large, G & H banded front base with matted ramp. Machined and knurled sight protector slides into grooves in base. Front swivel attaches to banded ring on bbl. Magnum length square bridge commercial Mauser action has checkered top of receiver ring and square bridge. Lyman 48 receiver sight is mounted on right side of bridge. Top staff of sight is inlet into square bridge. Typical commercial bolt handle has starburst engraving on tip, and knurled band around middle. Bolt body, action rails, and follower show typical G & H damascening. Original flag type safety is grooved on tip with “Ready” and “Safe” inlaid in silver. Extra large number 20 bottom metal has hinged floorplate retained by button in trigger guard bow. Intertwined initials “MS” are inlaid in gold in oval on bottom of floorplate. (G & H research suggests possible Mort Swimmer association.) Typical G & H style full pistol grip nicely marbled and slightly figured European walnut stock measures 14″ over Silvers type pad, and features G & H style sling loop, steel grip cap, single shadow line Whelen style cheekpiece, diamond grip, ejection port relief, horn forend tip, and finely executed 24 LPI wrap around point pattern checkering with mullered borders. Stock is also fitted with 2 engraved reinforcing bolts. Oval silver escutcheon on toe line is engraved “505 Gibbs” “Magnum” “Poldi”. CONDITION: Excellent. Metal retains nearly all original satin rust blue with minor silvering on some sharp edges, and some marks from sling swivel use. Stock retains virtually all its hand rubbed oil finish with a few very minor marks and dings from handling and use over the years. Finger nail size area on right side of stock near floorplate has a number of fairly deep compressions. Original checkering shows very slight wear with a few diamonds missing. Recoil pad is correct replacement. Bore is near mint. Rifle shows very little evidence of ever having been fired. A spectacular example of an American classic in the largest caliber available, suitable for anything that walks or swims in the world today. 4-39165 MGM4 (27,500-37,500)
