HOLLAND AND HOLLAND 4 BORE SINGLE SHOT FOWLER WITH CASE AND ACCESSORIES. SN 5890. Cal. 4 Bore. 42″ Round three-stripe fine Damascus barrel with Nock form and bolsters at breech end, is engraved “Holland & Holland, 98 New Bond St. London.” on top toward rear. This is surrounded by 4″ elongated triangles of scroll engraving on either side. Bottom of bbl is stamped with SN and London black powder proofs for 6 Bore. Large nickel-plated round bar action with Jones underlever has well filed fence, and about 40% coverage of scroll engraving. Large back action peninsula lock has chamfered serpentine hammer with scroll engraving, and “Holland & Holland” at top of plate. Large steel trigger guard has a tang which extends into a pistol grip. Trigger is coarsely checkered. Dense, lightly streaked and nicely figured European walnut buttstock measures 13-7/8″ over “London Guns” Silvers type pad fitted over original hard rubber widow’s peak. Stock has a vacant silver oval on toe line and 16 LPI flattop point pattern checkering with mullered borders. Large matching forend has horn tip and fastens to bbl with side nail through engraved steel oval escutcheons. SN is in barrel channel, and iron is nickel-plated. Bore diameter: .934 at muzzle. Wall thickness: .092 at muzzle. Drop at heel: 2-11/16″, drop at comb: 1-13/16″. Weight: 14 lbs. 3.5 oz, LOP 13-7/8″. Old brown canvas case with leather trim has round brass medallion on lid. Interior is lined with red cloth, and contains an old Holland & Holland paper label, round brass oil bottle stamped “Huey” on bottom, Geverlot Harris 4 bore paper case, and a red plastic 4 bore case. PROVENANCE: Holland letter, giving history with year of manufacture of 1880. CONDITION: Very fine. Bbl retains 30-40% original brown, considerably silvered at center, but strong at breech ends and muzzle, with some areas of minor pitting under forend wood, and about 11 inches from muzzle. Action, lock, and furniture retain most of what appears to be original nickel-plating, thinning at bottom of action, and turning to brown through grip, and at rear tang. Wood retains most of what appears to be its original oil finish with numerous slight dents, marks, and nicks, with some oil rubbed in over the years. Wood is slightly under the metal at head, which is not unusual in these large guns, due to wood shrinkage over time. Action is tight. Bbl is on face. Lock is crisp. Side nail retaining pin is missing, and head is chipped. Case is fine. Exterior canvas is slightly scuffed and discolored. Interior cloth is excellent. Original Holland label is considerably foxed, spotted, with one area worn through. Oil bottle is as new.
