*CHARLES HELLIS “MARK OVER” SIDE LOCK EJECTOR SPECIAL PIGEON GUN WITH ORIGINAL CASE. SN 4411. Cal. 12 Ga. 2-3/4″ Chambers. Very unusual special order gun with 30″ dovetailed steel bbls with flat file cut “Churchill” rib is engraved “Charles Hellis & Sons Ltd” and “121-3 Edgware Rd. London. England.” on tops. Bottoms of bbls are stamped “Made in England”. Bbl flats are stamped with Birmingham nitro proofs for 2-3/4″ chambers. Bbls are fitted with two loops to account for extra recoil from heavy pigeon loads. Front loop is stamped with SN. Case hardened sidelock action features automatic safety and double triggers. SN is on water table. Action and lockplates are engraved with large shaded open scroll. “C. Hellis & Sons Ltd” is in ribands on front of lockplates. Blued trigger plate and trigger guard have matching scroll and SN at grip. Nicely streaked and slightly figured semi-pistol grip European walnut buttstock measures 15″ over Silvers type pad, and features brass oval engraved “C.A.P.”, drop points, and 22 LPI point pattern borderless checkering. Special order, very unusual 11-1/2″ splinter forend has Anson release. Bore diameter: left -.730, right -.731. Bore restrictions: left -.023, right -.019. Wall thickness: left -.022, right -.026. Drop at heel: 1-7/8″, drop at comb: 1-5/16″. Weight: 8 lbs. 1 oz, LOP 15″. Makers leather case has brass corners. Interior is lined in dark bluish-green cloth with gold embossed black leather Hellis label, and contains a pair of “Milbro” snap caps, and small unmarked pewter oil bottle. CONDITION: Very fine, as partially refinished. Bbls retain virtually all of older London quality re-black with engraving very slightly washed. Action retains 50-60% case color, silvered on bottom, fences and beads. Lockplates retain approx 90% of their original case color, slightly silvered toward fronts. Top lever, trigger plate, and trigger guard retain most of their original blue, with silvering on thumbpiece, and thinning on grip and high edges of trigger guard. Stocks retain most of older hand rubbed oil finish, sharp edges slightly softened. Checkering has not been re-cut, and is slightly dirty. Action is tight. Bbls are on face. Ejectors are in time. Case leather is dark. Surface has been stabilized. Lid is loose, but completely attached. Straps are fairly new replacements. Replacement handle has detached on one end. Interior cloth is good. Partitions are somewhat loose. Label is fine, but with some compressions from contact with gun. The “Mark Over” gun is shown on advertisement for Hellis guns pictured on p. 238 of ATKIN, GRANT AND LANG by Don Masters. Price in 1934 was 50 pounds for the standard offering.
