SCARCE SHARPS MODEL 1874 FANCY SPORTING RIFLE. SN 158156. Cal. 45 2-1/10″. Fine sporting rifle with 28″ medium weight oct bbl, windgage globe front sight and standard Lawrence patent rear sight. The bbl and sight are completely unmarked. The top tang is mounted with a replacement sight base missing the staff, detent, and spring. The only markings on this entire rifle is the serial number on the top rear of the receiver. It is mounted with straight grain, American walnut with a Ballard-style hard rubber Schnabel-tipped forearm with Ballard pattern checkering. It has a pistol grip stock with added hard rubber grip cap and Sharp’s checkered steel butt plate. The wrist is checkered in unconventional patterns with about 18 lines per inch checkering. Trigger is checkered like long-range Sharp’s rifles. The bottom tang is of the stepped, long narrow type with a screw at the toe. This exact rifle is pictured on page 223 of SHARPS FIREARMS, Sellers. Mr. Sellers states that this rifle was sold to Charles H. Lennox, a workman at the Sharps factory who was employed as a stock finisher. That would explain the unusual checkering patterns and the equally unusual forearm. It was delivered on 20 October, 1877 on “Cooley’s account”. The rifle was later returned and sold to A. J. Plate of San Francisco, CA on 29 July, 1878 with a large group of other rifles. PROVENANCE: Bob Taylor; Frank Sellers collection CONDITION: Very fine to extremely fine. Bbl retains about 95-96% strong orig factory blue with some thin spots toward the muzzle and a few spots of light to moderate pitting with some mild touch-up in those areas. Receiver and lockplate retain most of their orig case colors lightly to moderately faded. Lever and hammer retain dark case colors, stronger in sheltered areas. Wood is sound with light handling and storage marks and retains most of its Lennox varnish. Mechanics are crisp, bright shiny bore. 4-33766 JR495 (17,500-22,500)
