JAMES PURDEY BEST SELF OPENING SIDE LOCK EJECTOR HEAVY GAME GUN WITH CASE. SN 15121. Cal. 12ga. Double triggers. Automatic safety. 30″ Chopper lump steel bbls engraved “J. Purdey & Sons. Audley House. South Audley Street. London.” “Made of Sir Joseph Whitworth’s Fluid Pressed Steel.” on the concave game rib w/ half inch triangle scroll at breech. Bbl flats have old London provisional and definitive nitro proofs and new London (2002) nitro proofs for 70mm chambers at “850 BAR” and “18.6” mm. The bottoms of the bbls are also stamped “choke” and SN “15121” (1895). Whitworth tube nos. “13938” and “13939” are stamped on the loop. Beesley self opening action has Purdey hidden third fastener, side clips, and bushed strikers. It is engraved w/ very high quality fine rose and scroll probably done by noted Purdey engraver J. Lucas. The bottom of the action is engraved “Purdey’s Patent.” The lock plates are engraved “J. Purdey & Sons.” The top lever is engraved “Patent”. “Safe” is inlaid in gold in front of the safety button. The figured and beautifully streaked European walnut straight grip buttstock measures 15-1/8″ over checkered wood butt w/ typical Purdey drop points, gold oval engraved “P.A.V”, and very finely executed 28 LPI checkering w/ mullered borders. The Anson release splinter forend has wood and checkering to match buttstock. Bore diameter: left -.733, right -.733. Bore restrictions: left -.023, right -.018. Wall thickness: left -.026, right -.031. Drop at heel: 2-1/2″, drop at comb: 1-1/2″. Weight: 7 lbs 8oz. The gun is housed in its original oak and leather case w/ brass corners and round central medallion. Interior is lined w/ red baize, w/ James Purdey and Sons label, instructions for use of gun, and charge label inscribed w/ guns number and suggested loads. Accessories include 2-pc wooden cleaning rod w/ brushes and mops, ebony handled striker key, hard rubber handled turn screw, James Purdey & Sons marked oil bottle, and snap caps. PROVENANCE: Description from Upland Gun Room listing this gun for sale. CONDITION: Excellent as refurbished. Gun retains virtually all of its extremely high London quality blue, polish, and case color. The new very best quality buttstock and forend have only a few minor dings from use. Breech faces show some wiping. Action beads are slightly silver. Actions are tight and on face. Ejectors are in time. Drop is good. Case is very good, new leather cover w/ a few minor scuffs. Interior partitions are good. Cloth shows some wear, mostly where action sits, and is dirty where in contact w/bbls. Labels are browned. Some chips, cracks, and wear.
