VERY FINE PHILIPPE GRIFNEE ENGRAVED JAMES PURDEY SELF OPENING SIDE LOCK EJECTOR HEAVY GAME GUN WITH CASE. SN 15757. Cal. 12ga. 2-3/4″ Chambers. Double triggers. 30″ Chopper lump steel bbls are stamped “Made in England” on the sandblast finish concave top rib, and engraved “J. Purdey & Sons. London” in large Gothic script on the left barrel. Bbl flats show London nitro proofs for 1-1/4oz shot. Bottoms of bbls are marked “choke” and SN “15757” (1897). Loop is stamped w/ the Whitworth tube nos. “18564” and “18565”. The Beesley self opening action has Purdey third fastener, side clips, bushed strikers and automatic safety. The trigger plate is engraved beside the front trigger “Ph. Grifnee.” The action is profusely engraved w/ extremely well executed relief open shaded scroll, w/ stippled background. The bottom of the action has a beautifully executed 3 dimensional gold inlay of a wild turkey. The fences are relief engraved w/ 3 dimensional acanthus leaves and flowers. Action and fence beads are left unengraved. The side locks have “James Purdey & Sons” in Gothic script inlaid in a shaped rectangle. The left lock plate has large relief shaded scroll and acanthus engraving w/ superimposed gold inlays of a pair of Canada geese in flight. The right lock plate has matching scroll, w/ inlaid gold pair of ducks flushing. “Safe” is inlaid in gold on the top tang. Trigger guard has matching scroll w/ no. “15757” inlaid in an oval on the grip. The beautifully flame figured and streaked Turkish walnut semi pistol grip buttstock measures 14-5/8″ over leather covered pad and features a silver oval w/ “JPA” incised, nicely shaped drop points, and very nicely cut 24 LPI checkering w/ mullered borders. Anson release splinter forend has matching engraving, checkering, and wood. Bore diameter: left -.736, right -.734. Bore restrictions: left -.036, right -.026. Wall thickness: left -.024, right -.025. Drop at heel: 2″, drop at comb:1-1/2″. Weight:7 lbs 9.6oz. Toe under leather case has stitched leather corners. Interior is lined in maroon cloth w/ black leather and gilt James Purdey & Sons label. CONDITION: Excellent. Gun remains virtually new as refurbished w/ only a very few slight handling marks in the wood. Bores are bright and shiny w/ no visible imperfections. Case is near new w/ only a few scuffs on corners. This gun is a truly beautiful piece of artistic craftsmanship. 4-35528 MGM37 (45,000-65,000)
