*JAMES PURDEY EXTRA FINISH 20 BORE SIDE LOCK EJECTOR WITH CASE. SN 25159. Cal. 20ga. 2-1/2″ Chambers. Double triggers. 29″ Chopper lump bbls have no. “2” inlaid in gold, and are engraved “J. Purdey & Sons, Audley House, South Audley Street. London. England. Made of Sir Joseph Whitworths Fluid Pressed Steel.” on narrow concave game rib, w/ engraving toward breech end. Bbl flats are stamped w/ London nitro proofs for 2-1/2″ chambers and “Griffin & Howe NY NY”. Bottoms of bbls are stamped “Choke”, SN “25159” (1936), and initials “G.W” (George Wood, barrel maker). Tube nos. “62445” and “62446” are stamped on loop. “2” is stamped on bottom of rear lump. Case hardened action has dual under lugs and bushed strikers, and is covered w/ large open shaded floral acanthus scroll. Fences and top lever are relief engraved w/ acanthus scroll and flowers w/ stippled background. All engraving probably by Kell family. Bottom of action is engraved “J. Purdey & Sons London England” and “J. Purdey & Sons” is on lock plates. Blued tumbler ends have raised rib cocking indicators. Trigger guard has matching scroll w/ SN on grip. “Safe” is inlaid in gold on top tang. Nicely figured and striped straight grip buttstock measures 15-1/8″ over leather covered pad, features large gold oval, w/ monogram “PS”, drop points, and 22 LPI checkering w/ mullered borders. Splinter forend has Anson release w/ “2” inlaid in gold in the tip w/ checkering to match buttstock and SN, no.”2″ and initial “H” (Len Howard or Fred Hughes) on iron. Bore diameter: left -.618, right -.618. Bore restrictions: left -.023, right -012. Wall thickness: left -.028, right -.028. Drop at heel: 2-5/16″, drop at comb: 1-3/8″. Weight: 6 lbs 5oz. Leather CASE has old William Ford shipping label on lid. Interior is lined in red cloth w/ leather Purdey label. Accessories include wooden cleaning rod, and Coster & Son, Glasgow oil bottle. PROVENANCE: Purdey letter with specifications of gun. CONDITION: Fine. Bbls retain nearly all high quality glossy London re-black. Action has traces of case color in protected areas, but is mostly silver gray. Trigger guard has virtually all of re-black w/ engraving slightly washed. Top lever retains all of its re-black. Screws are good, but show some use. Wood shows virtually all oil refinish over some old scrapes and dings. Checkering has been re-cut. Bores are bright and shiny w/ few pits toward breech end of right bbl. Action is tight. Bbls are on face. Ejectors are slightly out of time. Drop is good. CASE is fine, leather is smooth w/ few abrasions. Handle is good, straps are missing. Interior partitions are tight, cloth is good, as is label. 4-35771 MGM114 (37,500-47,500)
