*E. A. MERKEL DOUBLE RIFLE WITH SCOPE. SN 9250. Cal. 8 x 57 JR. Double triggers (Both set). 23″ Steel dovetailed bbls have “E. A. Merkel” and “Suhl” inlaid in gold on top, and “Witten Excelsior Stahl” is stamped in circular logo. Broad flat matted rib is fitted w/ claw mounts, one standing, 1 folding rear sight and front bead sight longitudinally dovetailed into a raised front ramp. Bbl flats have German nitro proofs, are stamped “Excelsior Witten” and have Witten trademark. Sling loop is screwed to bottom rib. Box lock action has dual under lugs, Greener cross bolt third fastener, side clips, and pin cocking indicators. Action is engraved w/ large acanthus shaded scroll, w/ “Green man” on bottom, battling stags on left side, and running roebuck on right. Roebuck on trigger guard. Rifle has Greener side safety w/ “S” inlaid in gold. Nicely figured and streaked European walnut semi pistol grip buttstock measures 13-7/8″ over ribbed horn butt plate, w/ Bavarian right hand cheek piece and 26 LPI checkering w/ double line border. Cartridge trap engraved w/ acanthus scroll, charging boar, and another green man. Long, splinter forend has Deeley release, horn tip, and checkering to match buttstock. Drop at heel: 2-3/8″, drop at comb: 1-3/8″. Weight w/ scope: 8 lbs 1 oz. Weight without scope: 7 lbs 4oz. SCOPE is Hensoldt 2-3/4 power w/ picket post reticle, and leather covers w/claw mounts nicely fitted to bbls. PROVENANCE: Dr. Frank Miller Collection. CONDITION: Very good. Bbls retain virtually all good quality re-black. Action is mostly silver w/ faint traces of case color in protected areas. Wood has most of old varnish refinish. Checkering re-cut. Bores are strong, but dark in grooves w/ considerable erosion in throats. Action is tight. Bbls are on face. SCOPE is good as re-blued. Optics are slightly fogged.
