*EXTREMELY RARE EARLY SPRINGFIELD MODEL 1903 RIFLE WITH STAR GAUGE BBL. SN 470828. Cal. 30-06. Early 1903 with 24″ bbl, with “4-11” date, standard front sight with sheet metal hood and 2,700 yard rear sight. Mounted in a nicely figured, uncheckered American walnut 1-pc stock with grasping grooves and a split machined front band/bayonet lug with stacking swivel and a grooved middle band with sling loop and a corresponding loop in buttstock. It has the full length handguard with two spring clips. Left side of wrist has a crisp “J.F.C.” cartouche in a rectangle with “P” stock proof below trigger guard. It also has a checkered steel buttplate with trap containing a nickeled brass oiler and cleaning set, missing implements. Trigger guard & floorplate are orig milled style. Accompanied by this rifle’s orig Star Gauge record dated “August 3, 1911” with an illegible signature, nicely framed. Also accompanying is a “detailed data sheet” from a previous owner fully identifying this rifle with the comment “This is the earliest 1903 that I have found with a Star Gauged record card.” This is the earliest Star Gauged 1903 known to this cataloguer also. CONDITION: Fine. Overall retains about 75-80% orig blue, strong on bbl & front band, thinning on receiver, middle band & floorplate. Wood is sound with minor nicks & scratches and retains a wonderful hand worn patina. Mechanics are fine, bright shiny bore. 4-31997 JR255 (5,000-7,000)
