*CASED WINCHESTER MODEL 21 GRAND AMERICAN DBL BBL SHOTGUN 2-BBL SET MADE FOR JAMES F. TOWEY. Cal. 12 ga. SN W32273. James F. Towey was the President of Winchester Repeating Arms in the 1970’s and this shotgun was made in 1978 especially for him. It has two sets of bbls, bbls #1 are 30” choked FULL/MOD and bbls #2 are 28” choked MOD/IMP-CYL. Both have flat, tapered, matted, ventilated ribs with dbl ivory beads and ejectors with gold plated sgl selective trigger on receiver. Both ribs are marked “CUSTOM BUILT BY WINCHESTER”. All of bright metal on bbl flats, lugs, ejectors, breech faces, water table & standing breech are very nicely jeweled. Mounted with extraordinarily colorful, exhibition quality, center crotch cut, Claro walnut with two “B” style carved & checkered forearms and pistol grip stock, 14” over a leather covered pad. Bottom of stock has a gold initial plate engraved “JFT” and the grip cap has “GRAND AMERICAN” in gold. Receiver is engraved in standard Grand American patterns with a gold setter on left side, a gold pointer on right side, two gold pheasants on floorplate and a gold spaniel’s head on trigger bow, all surrounded by fine foliate arabesque patterns with deep relief oak leaves on the fences. Engraving extends about 2-5/8” up over chamber areas of bbls. Accompanied by a Cody Firearms Museum letter fully identifying this shotgun with both sets of bbls, as found. One sheet has a notation “No gun case or canvas wanted”. However, in this cataloguer’s experience this is an orig Winchester casing and canvas cover. Also accompanied by this orig, burgundy felt lined, brown leather casing, compartmented in bottom for the stocked receiver and both sets of bbls with several smaller empty compartments. Lid is embossed “JAMES F TOWEY” and the orig case cover is identically embossed on the center leather applique. BBLS #1: Bore diameter: left – .727, right – .726. Bore restrictions: left – .028, right – .009. Wall thickness: left – .030, right – .034. BBLS #2: Bore diameter: left – .726, right – .726. Bore restrictions: left – .010, right – .002. Wall thickness: left – .037, right – .037. Drop at heel: 2-1/4”, drop at comb: 1-1/2”. Weight with 28” bbls: 7 lbs. 12.8 oz. CONDITION: Extraordinarily fine, as new. Retains virtually all of its orig factory finish to both metal & wood. It has bright blue, turning slightly plum over top of receiver and some light alligatoring to the buttstock finish. Mechanics are crisp, bright shiny bores. Case is equally new. 4-31153 JR451 (35,000-50,000)
