*ULTRA-RARE ONE OF A KIND CASED CHARLES BOSWELL BIG BORE DOUBLE RIFLE. Cal. 600 Nitro Express & 12 ga. SN 0001. Spectacular sidelock dbl rifle with 26-5/16” rifle bbls with pedestal front sight having a folding moon sight and a quarter rib with 3-leaf express sight, two folding, one standing, ejectors with heavy third bite, dbl chopper lumps and dbl triggers with the front trigger articulated. It also has a set of 26” shotgun bbls choked FULL/IMP-MOD with 3-1/2” chambers, tapered, smooth, concave rib, Bradley white ivory bead with third fastener, dbl chopper lumps & ejectors. Both sets of bbls have maker’s name in gold on rib and each has its own forearm. Mounted with exhibition quality, straight grain, English walnut with the two checkered forearms and pistol grip stock with raised teardrop side panels and a heavy cheekpiece, 15-1/4” over a solid red Old English pad. Metal grip cap has a trap. Rifle bbls have a safari swivel on bottom rib with a corresponding swivel on buttstock. It has extended top tang up over the comb and a long bottom tang that terminates at grip cap. Receiver & all appended metal parts are spectacularly engraved by Neil Hermsen and signed on bottom of receiver, with fabulous game scenes of two gold rhinos on left lockplate in a veldt scene and three gold elephants on right lockplate also in a veldt scene with a gold lion chasing a gold zebra on bottom, also in a veldt scene. Triggerguard has a gold leopard head and there are fine gold wire patterns on the receiver reinforcements. The thumb lever has a gold lion’s head and the top tang has “SAFE” in gold. The forearm levers are engraved to match with a gold lion’s head on latch on rifle bbls and a gold goose on the latch of shotgun bbls. Forend iron also has gold wire inlay. Maker’s name is in gold on each side of receiver and serial number is in gold on bottom tang. Accompanied by several pages of documentation regarding the manufacturing company and correspondence regarding this set, along with the orig order sheets. It was apparently ordered by a gentleman from Indiana in August of 1988 with the orig order for two sets of 12 ga. bbls and one set of 20 ga. bbls, along with the orig rifle bbls. The 20 ga. bbls are crossed off and conversation with Ronnie Roberts, the owner of the Charles Boswell Company at that time, disclosed that the 20 ga. bbls and one set of 12 ga. bbls were never made. Mr. Roberts stated that this is the one and only 600 Nitro Express dbl rifle ever built by his company. He stated that since it was the first production piece, that extra care was taken during the manufacture and especially with the engraving as they wanted it to be an advertising showpiece for their company. Also accompanied by its orig Huey oak & leather case with burgundy ultra-suede lining, compartmented in bottom for the three pieces of the gun, a set of three ebony handled turn screws, a pair of brass snap caps & a rnd brass oil bottle, a rnd brass parts bottle and a 2-pc brass & ebony cleaning rod. A compartment in the end, with the cover missing, contains cleaning jags, brushes & mops. 12 ga. bbls: Bore diameter: left – .742, right – .739. Bore restrictions: left – .048, right – .040. Wall thickness: left – .034, right – .046. Drop at heel: 2”, drop at comb: 1-3/8”. Weight with rifle bbls: 15 lbs. 14.4 oz. Weight with shotgun bbls: 10 lbs. 8.96 oz. CONDITION: Extremely fine, as new. May have been fired, but if so, very little. Blue on bbls is all bright & clean and case colors on receiver, lockplates & forend iron are all brilliant, showing no wear. Wood has a small ding on right side of buttstock & another on the comb, otherwise is completely sound and retains about all of its hand rubbed, orig finish.
