ENGRAVED WINCHESTER MODEL 1866 LEVER ACTION RIFLE. Cal. 44 CF. SN 143911. Fine late Henry with 24-1/4” oct bbl, full magazine, altered half nickel front sight & a late ‘66/early 1873 semi-buckhorn rear sight with checkered edges and it has a steel forend cap. Mounted with very nicely figured, slab-sawed, uncheckered, replacement American walnut with straight stock & crescent brass buttplate with trap. Serial number is not in top tang channel of buttstock and the number inside toe of buttplate is “3789”. Trap in the buttplate is a replacement. Lower tang has been brazed back in place, hammer spring is a replacement & lever latch tension spring is rusted & broken. Receiver & sideplates are very nicely engraved, probably by Nimschke, with about 75% coverage, fine foliate arabesque patterns with a blank elliptical shape on left side. Carrier is very nicely engraved. CONDITION: Very good, as previously noted. Bbl & magazine tube retain a smooth dark brown patina with a few scattered light nicks & dings. Forend cap is a silver/gray patina. Receiver retains traces of silver plating with carrier having strong silver plating. Forearm has a crack at left front edge, otherwise wood is sound and retains about all of a restored finish. Timing needs adjustment and latch tang on lever has been brazed, otherwise mechanics are fine, strong dark bore with fine pitting. 4-30696 (8,000-12,000)
